The Passenger 2023 + The Last Day of Pompeii by Karl Bryullov
Some staples from the “weird girl” genre that are some of my favorites
This is genuinely such a beautiful shot
do you believe in God? - “god.” - it’s in me.
This is the bed from Lon Chaney's Phantom of the Opera and Sunset Boulevard movies! It was made for the King of Spain to give to French actress & singer, Gaby de Slys. Universal bought it on her death in 1920 and it was used in several movies, most notably in The Phantom of the Opera (1925).

I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE A POINT ABOUT HOW OBJECTIVELY FANTASTIC THE CINEMATOGRAPHY OF HEATED RIVALRY IS.
so i was watching heated rivalry with my best friend because DUH im going to make them watch my favourite show right now OBVIOUSLY
they like it well enough, i'd say not as obsessed as i am but definitely a fan; plus, we're insanely shane and ilya coded, so that really helps.
my point being, this is a person who's only seen the show once, and who's only investment in it is knowing that their friend will kill them if they don't like it [barely a threat anyway, i'm useless].
we were watching episode 1, and we get to the end, to the balcony scene in las vegas, and there is a moment [at around 48 minutes by my count] of ilya's face is half illuminated by this gorgeous lighting, half cast in shadow. connor looks gorgeous. very achillean.
and my friend, who is, by the way, exceptionally judgemental and critical and very much a pretentious filmbro, says something along the lines of "wow, that shot alone is oscar worthy."
firstly. they're so right and true and correct. and secondly. let's consider what it says about a show that was made on a reasonably meager budget that a person who has no vested interest in it and is generally extremely hard to please had THAT positive of a reaction to it??????
the lighting and camerawork in the whole show, and very much in that balcony scene, are TRULY something else. i don't know what's in the water over there in canda but please, PLEASE keep making things like this. PLEASE.
