Celebrate victories. Each and every one. Today was a victory for me! I had over 10k steps...over 11.5k actually. I had at least 250 steps every hour during the day today. I drank enough water to stay hydrated today and I worked out. Even if I had only completed one of these things I would have celebrated. Celebrate victories. 2016 Cinnamon Goals
This whole thing was inspired by Hannah Hart’s Cinnamon Goals MDK episode. Might have watched it for the Hangrid and stayed for the goals. I can’t help it, they’re adorable.
I have a lot of things in mind for 2016, some of which are carry-overs from 2015, which is okay. 2015 was my first full year as an adult, with a big-kid job and a big-kid degree. I have learned a lot from this first year of adulthood and I still have a ton to learn. I’ve moved across the country, started a new job, met some new friends and lost track of some old ones. I’ve dated, and been let-down. I’ve bought real furniture, and spent way too much money on things I don’t really need. That being said, I am still learning and have a ton of room to improve on things. I am working on learning to love myself for who I am, and gaining confidence to be true to myself in any light. Okay, enough of that.
ON TO THE GOALS!
Pay off all of my student loans.
Finally reach my goal size and be comfortable in my skin.
Start saving up for a trip around the world.
Take more pictures.
Go on more hikes.
Some of these goals are larger than others. And no goal can ever be accomplished without setting a plan in place, I am a very firm believer in planning.
Plan for reaching my first goal:
Pay off all my student loans! I am currently about $24k in the hole with my student loan/credit card debt. Seeing that number on paper is incredibly terrifying, but I am embracing it. That was the cost of my portion of my education, it is what is allowing me to have the job that I do, and live in the place that I love. First step in that plan is to cut as many of my extraneous expenses out as possible. I leased a car, which at the time made sense, because I was counting on the extra income from driving Uber. Realistically though, I would have to drive for Uber every weekend during all of my free time to truly make it worthwhile. I would like to have a social life and eventually meet a lady, so that is not possible. I am going to sell my lease and get out of that monthly payment (about $450 a month including insurance). I am going to start riding my bike and using the public transportation more, since that is basically free for me. And it will help keep me in shape. I am also going to pay off my T-mobile phone and switch to Ting, which I’ve read great things about and it also lets me keep my phone, which saves me from losing more money on buying a compatible phone, just to save money. I am going to keep about $150 per month in “fun money”, of which any extra will go straight into a jar fund for traveling. I have budgeted $250 a month for food (eating ketogenic can be pricey) and my rent until April will be about $725 a month. I joined a Crossfit gym near my place and while it is pricey, I do feel it is worth it for my health and wellness goals. Second step: get rid of the credit card debt (about $2500). I’ll be able to wipe that out with my tax return in February/March. Third step: Dump all extra income into my student loans. With my currently budget in place, and making the same amount of money as I did this year, it is possible. I’ll have to be very frugal about my purchases and really make sure that I am spending money on only necessities, but in the end, it will be such a relief to be out from underneath this debt.
Plan for reaching my second goal:
Finally reach my goal size and be comfortable in my skin! This one I halfway touched on in the last section, but I’ll expand. I have always been the bigger girl for as long as I can remember. In November 2014, I discovered the ketogenic diet (aka low carb or “paleo-ish”). In one year, I lost about 40 lbs by just diet alone. I wasn’t 100% dedicated the entire year, and by the one year mark, I had gained back 20 of the pounds I had lost. This December (2015) I joined a Crossfit gym for a 21 day fix program. It introduced me to Crossfit as well as others who are in like situations as me. It really opened my eyes and kick started my motivation to get back into eating clean and becoming strong! Throughout the 21 days, I didn’t lose as much weight as I wanted, but instead, I gained the confidence to lift heavy weights and I did end up losing a few inches in my waist. I’ve let myself rest a bit over the holidays, but as soon as I get home, I am recommitting and getting back into the daily gym grind. Last year, my highest weight was 244 lbs. This year, I’m at 211 and my goal is to hit 150, or fit into my jeans from my freshman year of college (about a size 11/13 Bullhead denim). I’m learning to worry less about the number on the scale and more about the way I am feeling in my clothes and in general. Eventually, I won’t even have to worry about what the scale says, which will be incredibly freeing.
Plans for reaching my third goal:
Saving for a trip around the world! I want to travel more. I grew up in Indiana, and lead a semi-sheltered life. I’ve flown in an airplane more times in the past year than I ever have in my entire life. Now that I am living in Oregon, I am meeting a lot more people who have spent a significant amount of time backpacking in Europe and other places, and I want to experience the world like that as well. I want to save up at least $25k and take a year off of work to travel and explore the world, meeting new people and taking as many photos as I can. Since this year is going to be tight on the budget with paying off my loans, this goal will stretch into two years. However, I will be taking any extra money that I budgeted for and did not use for a travel fund, so that I can start saving as much as I can.
Plans for reaching my fourth goal:
Take more pictures! I bought a new camera and I want to spend the year refining my knowledge of photography and becoming comfortable with taking pictures under stressful situations as well as taking the time to really frame the photograph beautifully. This will also come in handy for my year of travel in the near future.
Plans for reaching my fifth goal:
Go on more hikes! I live in one of the most beautiful places in the world and I want to take advantage of every second of it! It also ties into two of my other goals, getting in shape and traveling the world. I want to expand my outdoors knowledge and become a backpacker. I have a lot to learn in order to be safe, but I want to spend as much time as I can outdoors this year (and many years to come). Plus, I watch entirely too much Netflix and I need something to better fill that time-suck in my life.
Anyways, those are my main goals for 2016. Here’s to a new year of improvement and growth!
