"If you already know you're going to hate it, why give them your money?" says James Rolfe, a man who has made an entire career out of talking about things that he knows he is going to hate.
seriously, any respect at all i may have had for james just flew out the window. His entire argument against the new ghostbusters movie is that it is, in his words, "a shameless attempt to bank on the [ghostbusters] name".
if you're not sure what i'm talking about, here.
like, alright. lets pretend that this movie is totally separate from the canon of the first two ghostbusters movies. and that this movie is not, in fact, about four people (one of whom is black, and incidentally is the only one among the group who is not a scientest) in ghostbusters outfits fighting ghosts using proton packs and traps. nah, that never happened in the original ghostbusters.
but moving on. if he's really so against this trend of piggy-backing off of popular ips with new stories that feature almost entirely different casts, then where has he been for the past like, ten years? they did the same thing with terminator, they did the same thing with transformers. he's a huge horror fan, so why hasn't he been talking about the past like, five times they've remade a 80's horror movie? why isn't he talking about the new exorcist? they're making blockbuster hits out of 80's nostalgia, and if james has a huge problem with that, then why is it only this film that he's taking issue with?
there's one very obvious reason there, one notable thing that differentiates this film from those others- it’s not targeted towards him. james is just sad that this ghostbusters isn't the one he watched before. he's scared that maybe, maybe, this new ghostbusters movie isn't going to match up to the wet-dreams he had of a new film when he was 8 years old.
i'm not even saying that the new ghostbusters movie is going to be good. im probably not going to see it (in all sincerity- i just don't like melissa mccarthy). i don't what we have seen of the film so far- but i don't dislike it simply because it's different. you would have to try to be as un-self-aware as james is right now. so, james rolfe- you've lost a subscriber.
"Do you watch horror movies?" Does Board James count?

Curating Archives in a Digital Age
In my class on research and methodologies of film, we recently explored the area of Archival efforts and Orphan films. While we discussed this issue mostly from the academic side, I jotted down numerous organizations whom I consider to also be archivists, curating content in such a way enable by a digital age. Educational The first that came to mind was the Public Domain Review, a site dedicated…
