NOGA EREZ : CIPI
This may be a dumb question, but How did Shala’s relationship with her mother change from Cipi being pressuring and then disappointed in her, to actually caring for her?
MOD: Cipi losing her mate really opened Cipi’s eyes to how close she’d been to losing her daughter. Some of my characters deal with the loss of a significant other in a bad way, but Cipi isn’t one of those. It takes her and Shala a few years to really feel like they have a healthier relationship, but both are willing to rebuild in the wake of so much loss.
Also, Cipi did care about Shala despite being disappointed in her; she was only disappointed that the life she’d envisioned for her child wasn’t going to pan out the way she wanted.

What was Shala's relationship with her parents like?
MOD: In Cipi’s case, their relationship started out pretty rocky. (HAHA no pun intended I swear.) Cipi pushed Shala a lot towards being someone she wasn’t born to be or even to become, which left them with a lot of negative feelings towards each other; Cipi was left disappointed and terrified that her child wouldn’t leave a mark on the world in the conventional Chroma way. Meanwhile Shala felt guilt and frustration that her mother couldn’t accept her the way she was. Later in life, Cipi is actually incredibly supportive and one of the only dragons who knows that her daughter is in a relationship with Arsene, since Chroma society is still kind of iffy regarding same-gender relationships.
As for Abacus, Shala and him couldn’t have been closer, both as parent and child and as friends. Abacus was probably the first (and only) dragon to just have known his daughter is gay. Abacus was the first to get her into horticulture, and one of her biggest fans when it came to her writing. Shala was absolutely devastated when Abacus was killed, and when the Nature dragons disappeared from the Chroma capitol, that loss was only deepened. She’s felt a little cut off from that part of her life ever since, and it’s only when she’s in her garden when she feels truly at home and like she’s still a part of that culture.
