“Celia” The Circus Project

Backstory:

Celia Mirelle is a girl who comes from the conservative town of Wilsfield, Ucraice. She wants nothing more than to be reunited with her older sister Roselyn, who ran away with the circus years before. Over the years, after her father and mother died of a plague, she followed in her sister's footsteps and trained herself in the art of aerial silk dancing; so that she may one day be able to run away with the circus and have a family again. Only, when she finally makes it to the show, Rose rejects her, and she is left to prove herself to everyone- especially the sister that no longer loves her. 

A few fun facts about Celia: 

- Aerial silk dancing came naturally to her because she is very talented and graceful (also really strong/fit) 

- She'd never left her hometown before joining the circus; so literally an alien to all other cultures

- She’s actually pretty tall; 5′7 

- She’s an honest, spirited, passionate, impulsive, and gullible little dove :)

- Bisexual icon  ;)

- Very educated and booksmart! Not so much street smart though...  

- Her name itself means from the heavens/ heavenly 

-Was originally going to be the protagonist until my boi Silas stepped up :o

A pain far beyond tears

A metallic scent. A woman sat against a wall of an unkempt shack in an isolated forest. Questions began forming in her head. She looked to her hand at a bloodied shard of glass, and as she sat up, she felt a tug from her other hand. She turned. Beside her laid her husband, his neck stained, one hand tightly gripping a shard of his own, the other still locked with hers. Her gaze fell to her lap and trailed up to her chest. Her once feathery white blouse was now redder than the eyes of such a forsaken god that would reap such misery. She felt her heart stop, and her breath shorten. She held the shard in two hands and aimed the point at her throat. She awoke once more. Now kneeling in front of her husband, fresher blood dripping from her blouse. Her vision faded. The words echoed in her head: To hold a perfect form at all times. A body that shall never falter. Hesper rested her head on her lap and wept, gripping the shard tight enough to excrete blood from her skin. She whispered his name between gasps and hiccups. Her voice tore, inaudible cries bellowing from her throat. Her eyes were sore, but tears ceased to fall. The ring around her finger glinted pure gold, though also stained in blood. She sat up once more and held the shard up to her neck, and once again, lodged it into her throat, this time she had not lost consciousness. The only sound that escaped her trembling lips was a painful wheezing whimper. She shakily reached to the wound as it cauterized in only a few seconds, and soon disappeared. She folded over and sobbed into her hands, yet still, no tears fell. She leaned back and stared at the ceiling and held the glass shard in the light. She placed her husband's hand on her heart. The beat was steady, despite the heaving of her chest with the heavy breaths she took. She took the blade from his hand and pushed it deep into her chest, between her ribs and into her heart. She bent to the ground and hacked a fit of blood, but soon after taking the shard from her chest, the wound resealed. She retched. As she wiped her lips, she looked to the close-eyed man that sat before her. She took his cold hands in hers around the glass shard and forced it through her throat. Once more. Twice. A third time. She threw her fists to the ground and held the shard to her neck. Four times. Five times. Her hands, the shard, the ground and her chest were doused in blood, the fresh blood mixing with the dried blood. A warm hand took hold of her painted wrists, soon followed by a kind embrace. Hesper's eyes widened, but soon shut. Her mouth opened. And as she screamed, tears fell from her eyes.

I've been hyper focused on my NECCA audition materials for the past month, which means I haven't had a chance to mess with new tricks or workshop old ones much. So I spent most of yesterday's rehearsal playing with some things on my "to try" list, including cheststand rolls, which I haven't touched in YEARS.

Total credit to tumblr for showing me the thinker pose and making me want to try it. It's easily the most satisfying neck stretch I have right now.

The Circus Project is going through a big rebranding to go with our sweet new space, which means photoshoot time and also tiny adorable children in the air.

I've been NAILING some 30 second handstands lately! I took this last weekend in class when I was shooting my NECCA audition footage. I'm sorta amazed at how suddenly these have clicked into place- I've always felt like handbalancing was the act of building on millisecond successes, and now that I can hold handfuls of seconds pressed between my palms and the floor I can build myself better, faster.

(My coach Jacki keeps exclaiming at how I've gotten more solid so fast, and I've just been kinda abashedly saying 'Well, you told me you wanted me to at the beginning of the term!")

I haven't been making a ton of contortion videos lately because I've been busy getting my skills in order for my NECCA video audition. Fortunately, our new coach (who is AWESOME and WONDERFUL) wanted to see the sequences I've been working on for the audition, which gave me the impetus to run 'em. She gave me great notes, which I'm incorporating into the next few runs.

So here's audition sequence one! There's a second one that focuses on cheststands and deeper flexibility, but this is the balance-oriented one.
