"While attending the screening of Pierrot, I had forgotten what, apparently, one must say and think about Godard. That he has quirks, that he quotes this one and that one, that he lectures us, that he believes himself to be this or that… in short, that he is unbearable, verbose, moralizing (or immoralizing): I saw only one thing, one single thing, and that was that it was beautiful. Of a superhuman beauty. Physical all the way to the soul and imagination. What one sees for two hours is of such beauty that the word beauty is insufficient to define it: one should say of this parade of images that it is, that they are simply sublime. But today's reader can hardly tolerate the superlative. So be it. I think of this film that it is of sublime beauty. It's a word that is only used nowadays for actresses, and even then in backstage lingo. So be it. Constantly of a sublime beauty. Note that I hate adjectives."
