One long-stemmed rose for you, professor! 🐉🤍
Thank you! I have two recommendations: for effervescent love of language (and adventure in early modern Europe), Laurent Binet's Civilizations.
For swashbuckling adventure starring a man who does not know when to shut up or give up (affectionate, obviously): Prince of Foxes, Samuel Shellenbarger.

Civilizations
Felipe Fernández-Armesto
This "survival of the fittest/everyone for themselves" bullshit is exactly what causes literally every sinlge failed civilization to collapse and I just cannot believe I'm in a country where we're activley fucking failing to continue civilization.
Failing to care for each other and about other people or even YOUR OWN FUCKING OLD MAN FUTURE is going to FUCKING KILL US ALL and I just don't understand why our ancestors understood more about shared responsibility and collateral than WE DO RIGHT NOW
Its pissing me off so much HOLY SHIT
