Physical Reminders
I was driving last night when I misjudged a curb and slammed into it, blowing out my tire.
Greeeaaaat.
I pulled over soon after and changed the tire. You know the spiel; crank the car off the ground with the jack, unscrew the bolts, take the tire off, put the donut on, screw the bolts back on, make sure they're tight, lower the jack, put busted tire in trunk and then continue the drive.
I remember at one point during this drudgery thinking "this is not fun not was it meant to be."
Then, while driving home later, in a comically black turn I couldn't avoid a series of pot holes and busted the donut as well. Ha!
I remember seeing it coming and knowing exact what was going to happen...
BOOM! All the sudden I'm driving on grating, gnarling and grinding metal the rest of the way.
I wasn't stopping, though. It was around 1:20 in the morning. Just throw the hazards on and get the hell home, which I did about twenty minutes later.
I'm always aware of subtle cosmic meanings inside moments like these. At least, I like to think of them.
How we just live here; we don't own it.
Even if we built that curb, we didn't design the factors that result in impacts causing damage. Nothing designed them. They just are. And human behind try to negotiate with these immutable laws and work around them and with them.
And we've gotten this far in spite of ourselves. Also because of ourselves. No discounting. We're not the plague some people think we are. We can be misguided in our actions, of course. There is, however, always a trade off.
The machinery of our inexorable baby steps is not without it's fallibility. The harsh realm we exist in will not succumb to anything we do.
