So, I keep name lists as a DM, and I don’t know if this is useful to anyone else or not. If it is, please reblog or like, so I know to make more. Some of these names come from the PHB, but most of them are generated. Goliaths have 3 names: Birth name, name given to them by their chief, and their clan name. Personal headcanon : Clan names

Here is my personal headcanon regarding names and how they are commonly used within Ilwe’ran’s Clan.

Traditional name / Tribal name : Traditionally, males are given the name of their mother with a suffix added to designate the order in which they were born. This name is never used within the Clan but at time can be used by males as a way to present themselves in front of another Clan living in the same area.. Some sort of ID card so people know instantly from which Clan the male is coming and his place in the lineage. The purpose of this name is to avoid breeding between members of the same lineage. As you might already know, Clans are sedentary while males are nomad, to me males are kind of bards from medieval time : They are the one carrying the news from one Clan to another and help communication between families as well as having a role regarding trades. In exchange of those services, a male is given the right to stay a certain amount of time within a Clan and being taken care of. Of course, breeding is bound to happen during that period and while a Clan might be welcoming a male for the first time, the name given by this one already carry a lot of important information helping to keep the Clan strong by avoiding unhealthy breeding.

Given name / Birth name : Babies are given a birth name by their mother which is the one used commonly within the Clan and in front of strangers. This name is traditionally given by the mother, but it can happen that the father helps too depending on his bond with the mother and the Clan in general. A male not aiming to stay within a Clan or speaking to non Keepers will tend to share this name rather than their traditional one, as they often relate more to this one since it’s been chosen for them. Within Ilwe’ran’s Clan, the given name is most of time chosen for its meaning and is considered as a lucky charm for the child’s future.

Sacred name / True name : Once reaching adulthood, males and females are given another name during a ceremony which often happens at the same time as the Hunting Ceremony. This name is sacred and supposed to represent them as a person, thus it is only used by very closed family and friends as well as during important celebrations. Using this name when not allowed to is considered as extremely rude and repeated offense is a proof of disrespect.

As for Ilwe’ran : His traditional name is Antë’ra. Antë - his mother’s name - means giver, generous and good hearted, ‘ra is the 5th son suffix. His birth name is Ilwe’ran, which means rainbow. He uses only this name, regardless who he is speaking to, even among other Keepers. His sacred name is Ara, which means light of dawn and noble. Only Carina is calling him that way, before her only his mother did.

I have a new clan, and I need a name for it :/

Its basically a teenager who left to figure herself out and ended up collecting a bunch of random idiots and now they travel the world together :l

Theres the two grandmas of the group, the 20 yr old whos a mess, they’re adopted son, and three teenagers

No one knows whats going on at any given time :) Its fun :)

i finally came up with a name for my clan ;___; it’s not like....super creative, but i’m finally happy with it: clan equinox.

i’m kinda trying to go for an autumn themed gen one lair, and the autumnal equinox is cool in that it gives the sun and moon roughly equal duration in the day, which is kinda neat because then it kinda relates to me being in light flight? because of the sun? sort of? (LET ME LIVE)

also equinox is kinda an astrology thing which is ~* an interest *~ of mine so thats cool

Welp, it’s only been  *squints* 1 year, 3 months, and 15 days, but I finally decided on a name for my clan :,D

I decided to name it Archalus. I’m still wishy washy on how I want it to be pronounced, but I’m thinking something like “ahr-KAY-luss”
