“REFLECT”
by Sel WCA
When the drug culture of the 1960s resulted in a growing homeless population in Santa Monica a small group of visionaries took it on themselves to deliver food, blankets, and compassion. From its humble beginning in 1971, providing addiction services in a single Pico Blvd. apartment, within four short years CLARE Foundation had set the bar for what’s now known as the “Continuum of Care.” Born and raised in West Los Angeles Marcel Blanco, aka Sel, was surrounded by a diversity of cultures, music, and urban imagery that shaped him and his art. A long-time member of the West Coast Artists (WCA) graffiti crew Sel has also expanded into graphic design, but in his personal artwork he continues to integrate his diverse techniques and inspirations, and search for balance between graffiti and fine art. In 2017 Sel worked with Beautify Earth to create two such mural pieces for CLARE Foundation, this one at Pico and 9th St. @sel_dog/ @beautifyearth/ @clare.foundation
