On Saturday, the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will run out of money amid the ongoing government shutdown that began on Oct. 1. The government partially shut down nearly a month ago after the Senate failed to muster the votes necessary to pass a Republican-sponsored funding bill. Even though Republicans control the chamber 53-47, 60 votes are needed to overcome a procedural hurdle to move the bill forward. Democrats said they won’t support any funding bill unless it contains an extension of healthcare premium subsidies under the Affordable Care Act, which are slated to expire on Dec. 31.

As Nov. 1 has drawn closer, recipients of SNAP benefits – often called food stamps – have taken center stage in national media coverage.  According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, SNAP served 41.7 million Americans across 22 million households per month in 2024.

House Democrats—with unexpected help from a handful of Republicans—blocked a GOP effort Wednesday to censure Democratic Rep. LaMonica McIver of New Jersey and to boot her from the Homeland Security Committee. The push came after GOP Rep. Clay Higgins of Louisiana introduced a privileged resolution Tuesday, forcing a quick vote. Higgins argued that it’s a “significant conflict of interest” for McIver to serve on a committee overseeing Immigration and Customs Enforcement while she faces federal charges related to an altercation with immigration officers.

With Republicans holding a razor-thin majority in the House, the measure had a real shot at passing—a move that would’ve further squeezed McIver ahead of her November trial on charges that carry sentences of up to eight years. But in a surprise twist, the House voted 215-207 to table the resolution, with five Republicans breaking ranks and two voting “present.” McIver, who pleaded not guilty in June, has called the prosecution political retribution aimed at silencing dissent against President Donald Trump’s draconian immigration policies. The charges stem from a tense May 9 visit to the 1,000-bed Delaney Hall detention facility, where McIver and colleagues clashed with federal officers as Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested for trespassing. (The trespassing charge was later dropped, and Baraka is now suing interim U.S. Attorney Alina Habba—a Trump appointee who was later found to be serving illegally—for “malicious prosecution.”)

McIver maintains that she was the one who was assaulted during the incident, and in a statement Tuesday night, she accused Higgins of using the censure to score political points.

[...] Other Democrats are punching back, too. Rep. Yvette Clarke of New York, who also serves as Congressional Black Caucus chair, introduced her own privileged resolution to censure GOP Rep. Cory Mills of Florida, who faces a string of controversies—including allegedly threatening to release intimate photos of a former partner. Unlike the GOP’s unsuccessful resolution against McIver, Clarke’s effort does not call for Mills’ removal.

Glad to see the Republicans fail in their quest to censure Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-NJ).

Glen Clay Higgins (born August 24, 1961) is an American politician and reserve law enforcement officer from the state of Louisiana. A Republican, Higgins is the U.S. representative for Louisiana's 3rd congressional district. As well as being an elected official, Higgins continues to hold a law enforcement commission in a reserve capacity with the Louisiana Attorney General's office.

Born in New Orleans, and raised on a horse ranch near Covington, LA. After graduating from Covington High School, Higgins attended LSU and then went on to serve in the United States Army/Louisiana National Guard as a Military Police Officer, and he attained the rank of E-6, Staff Sergeant. Prior to joining Congress in 2017, Higgins had many successful years in business, but returned to uniform service as a street cop in 2004.

Lets see… Higgins has been divorced three times. He adopted his second wife's child from a previous marriage, and they had two more children together, divorcing in 1999. Higgins lives in Port Barre, Louisiana, with his fourth wife, Becca. A former manager of car dealerships and police captain Higgins earned his nickname “The Cajun John Wayne.” However, judging this hilljack book by it's cover.
