What’s Inside a Pack of Amel Susan Custard?
By Joseph Bassey Nsek
Let’s be honest. Most people don’t read food labels.
You pick up a product, flip it over (maybe), and if you can pronounce the first three ingredients, you assume the rest is fine. But in today’s world, where more consumers care about what they eat—and what they serve their families—that casual glance is changing. People want transparency. And I think that’s a good thing.
At Amel International Services Limited here in Nigeria, we’ve noticed this shift too. We see more shoppers checking packaging, asking what’s really in our custard, or why one brand tastes “fuller” than another. And frankly, we welcome those questions. They keep us honest.
So in that spirit, let’s take a deeper look at what’s inside a pack of Amel Susan custard—not just the ingredients, but why they’re there and what they actually do.
You won’t need a chemistry degree. Just curiosity.
Corn Starch (Maize-Based)
This is the backbone of custard. In our case, we use premium Nigerian-grown maize that’s milled to a fine powder. It’s what gives custard that smooth, creamy body once mixed with hot water or milk.
Corn starch is a natural thickener—it absorbs water and swells when heated, which is why your custard firms up as you stir. We source our maize locally to support agriculture within Nigeria, which also helps us keep the product fresh and affordable.
Nothing synthetic here. Just good, clean starch.
Natural Color (Annatto Extract)
Color is what turns an ordinary bowl of thick porridge into something familiar and appetizing.
Instead of artificial dyes (like tartrazine or sunset yellow), we use annatto—a natural pigment extracted from the seeds of the achiote tree. It gives that warm, golden-yellow tone that custard lovers recognize.
Why not synthetic colorants? Well, many consumers—especially parents—are becoming more cautious. Artificial colors have been linked (in some contexts) to behavioral concerns in children or sensitivities in adults. So we made the switch early, and we’ve stuck with it.
Flavourings (Natural and Nature-Identical)
Depending on the variant—banana, vanilla, milk—we add carefully selected flavorings to round out the taste.
What’s “nature-identical,” you ask? It’s a flavor compound that’s chemically the same as something found in nature but produced through safe, controlled processes. Think of it as the lab equivalent of extracting vanilla from a pod—only more consistent and cost-effective.
Why not just use real vanilla or bananas? Shelf life. Stability. Affordability. Real fruit extracts tend to spoil faster and can vary from batch to batch. So we strike a balance: natural when possible, nature-identical when it makes more sense.
Our goal isn’t fancy labels. It’s flavor you can trust.
Sweeteners (Optional)
Some of our custard varieties are lightly sweetened to enhance taste, while others come unsweetened for those who prefer to control their sugar intake.
In sweetened variants, we use simple food-grade sucrose—ordinary table sugar. No artificial sweeteners. No aspartame, no saccharin, nothing with numbers that sound like a secret code.
We’ve chosen to keep sweetness moderate. Just enough to bring out the flavors, without overwhelming your palate or adding unnecessary calories.
For families managing sugar intake, our unsweetened option gives full flexibility.
Salt (Tiny but Essential)
It’s barely noticeable—but a pinch of salt actually enhances the overall flavor of custard.
Salt balances the sweetness and intensifies the natural notes in the vanilla or banana. It also helps preserve the product a little longer by reducing moisture sensitivity.
We use a minimal amount, just enough to do its job without registering as “salty.”
No Preservatives
This is important.
Because our custard is dry and sealed in moisture-proof packaging, it doesn’t need artificial preservatives. That’s one of the great advantages of powdered food—when processed and stored correctly, it can last months without spoiling.
So you won’t find sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, or any other chemical preservatives in our product. Just careful handling and safe sealing.
That’s It. No Hidden Ingredients.
We’ve had customers ask, “What’s the emulsifier you use?” or “Do you add anti-caking agents?” The answer is: nothing hidden. We believe in clean-label production, and part of that means resisting the urge to over-engineer.
You won’t find vague terms like “flavor enhancers” or “permitted stabilizers” on our label. If it’s in the pack, it’s listed. And if it doesn’t serve a clear purpose, we don’t add it.
That’s our approach. Simple. Clear. Functional.
Why This Matters Now
You might be wondering—why break this down at all? It’s just custard, right?
Well, not quite. As consumers, we’re becoming more health-conscious. We’re questioning what goes into our food, especially when feeding children or managing conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, or food allergies.
By offering a transparent ingredient list, we invite customers to make informed choices. We believe good food shouldn’t be mysterious.
At Amel International Services Limited, based in Nigeria, this kind of clarity isn’t a marketing strategy. It’s a philosophy. One that earned us a nomination for the 2025 Go Global Awards, hosted by the International Trade Council in London this coming November. That event—far more than a ceremony—is a gathering of visionaries, changemakers, and global producers striving for excellence. And we’re proud to be part of that conversation.
Because food that’s made with integrity doesn’t just serve a local need—it speaks a global language.
Final Word: When in Doubt, Flip the Pack
Next time you pick up a pack of custard—ours or anyone else’s—do yourself a favor. Flip the pack. Read the list. Ask questions. You deserve to know what’s going into your bowl.
And if it says Amel Susan on the front, know that what’s inside has been made with care, intention, and clarity.
Because we don’t just feed families. We feed trust.
