いま僕たちが知らなきゃいけないSNSチャレンジ #trashtag

#Trashtag: A Challenge That Is Worth Talking About. SNSでよく流行る「〇〇チャレンジ」って、社会的に意義があるものは少ない。でも先週、1枚の写真でそのイメージを塗り替えたティーンエイジャーがいるんだ。

Byron RománはFacebookに、森で撮ったBeforeとAfterの写真を投稿。地面がゴミだらけのBeforeと、そのゴミを掃除してゴミ袋と撮ったAfterの写真だ。

彼は、暇なティーンエイジャーたちは「#Trashtag」チャレンジに参加しようと呼びかけた。

この投稿は30万回以上もシェアされて、環境を守ろうっていうムーブメントが始まった。

Viral challenges are rarely of any significance to our society but last week an image of a teenager proved that wrong. Byron Román posted a BEFORE and AFTER image on Facebook of an area littered with trash(BEFORE) and the area tidied up after filling several trash bags. He mentioned that “bored teens” should take part in a challenge called #trashtag.

His post received a whopping 330K shares which started a movement to keep our environment clean.

実は、#trashtag は新しく作ったチャレンジってわけではない。2015年にアウトドアの会社 UCO が始めたものなんだ。そのプロジェクトの当時のアンバサダーのSteven Reinholdは、

「運転中に窓からレシートを誤って飛ばしてしまった。すごくきれいな場所にゴミ捨ててしまって、申し訳ない気持ちになったんだ。だから僕たちは、ゴミを100個拾うことにしたんだ。」

と話していた。

4年経った今、このプロジェクトがすごく話題になっているんだ。世界中の人たちが、地域をきれいにした努力の結果をSNSに投稿し始めた。

Interestingly enough, #trashtag isn’t a new challenge. UCO, an outdoor clothing company, started the project up in 2015. One of the ambassadors at the time saw a receipt fly out of their car window and said -

“We kind of felt bad about it because it was in a really pretty location, so we decided to pick up 100 pieces of trash." - Steven Reinhold

The challenge had gained some traction around the world but after 4 years it has become viral. Now people from all around the world have started to post their amazing efforts on social media.

#trashtag のトレンド、日本だとやるのが難しいって言ってる人を見つけた。

彼女はツイッターで、

「あ、ゴミだ、やっと見つけた！…ってなんだ、葉っぱか」

って言ってるよ。

I tried looking for #trashtag in Japan and found this tweet from a foreigner who found it a little difficult to join the trend.

確かに日本って他の国と比べてわりとキレイかもしれない。

でもさ、毎年800万トンのプラスチックゴミが海に流れていて、海の汚染の80%は陸から来てるって言われてる。これって海の生き物とか、海の近くで暮らす人たちにすっごく有害だ。

Yes, this Twitter user is generally right, and yes, Japan is relatively clean in comparison to many countries around the world but the reality is 8 million tonnes of plastic is washed into the oceans every year and 80% is from land. This is extraordinarily detrimental to our marine life and coastal communities as they rely on each other for their livelihood.  

去年、国連は「100万匹の海鳥と10万匹の海の哺乳類たち」が毎年死んでいるって発表したんだ。そして、僕たちが出しているゴミが海の生態系に与えているダメージは、約8,900億円*の規模だ。 (*2019年3月15日時点)

The UN last year stated that “one million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals” die annually and that our trash causes $8 billion worth of damage to the marine ecosystem.

まとめ：地球の生態系には今、とてつもない変化が起きてる。生き物たちが死んで汚染されているのは、「僕たちの」ゴミのせいなんだ。

FINAL THOUGHT:  So to wrap it all up, our ecosystem is undergoing immense amount of change. Organisms are dying and being contaminated from OUR trash.

僕たちは、かなり海に頼って生活してるってことを忘れちゃいけない。海は、食べ物とか、地球の50%以上の酸素を作り出してるし、二酸化炭素の吸収もしてくれているんだ。

Let’s not forget we rely on the sea for food, it produces more 50% of earth's oxygen and stores more carbon than our atmosphere.

だからみんな、もっと環境を守っていきたいよね。ヒトの未来のためになるチャレンジに参加してみよう。

So let’s save the environment and do a challenge that benefits the future of our humanity.
