Liquid castile soap is traditionally only made from olive oil, but often, it refers to any kind of liquid soap which doesn’t have any animal fats, and is made from plant oil. It is one of the easiest soap recipes, and is good for beginner soap makers.
The recipe given here is used for magical and mundane cleansing and is very versatile for mundane use. This link and this other link talks about some cool ways you can use castile soap. There is nothing wrong with using store bought castile oil, but, making it yourself gives you more control over it, in terms of it’s magical properties.
We will be using lye, so you’ll need to be really careful how you handle this stuff.
You will need a blend of carrier oils or a pure carrier oil. Olive oil is traditional and moisturizing, but it can feel a bit slimy, and coconut oil cleans really well, but can end up being a bit dry, so, I’m making it with a combination of olive and coconut oil. Don’t use your rare and expensive oils for this (although, I would recommend using organic and cold pressed), because it is going to end up saponified, and, there’s no point wasting your nice oils. You can add your nice essential oils at the end, though, for scent, or your nice carrier oils, for moisturizing purposes.
The other ingredient you need is potassium lye (make sure that it isn’t sodium lye, because sodium lye makes hard soaps, and that is not what we want). The amount of lye you use does depend on the kind of oil you’re using. Brambleberry has a useful page you can use to calculate the amount of lye you need, if you’re making your own recipe. For a good castile soap, make sure that you put the superfatting level to none.
I’m also using glycerin, because glycerin decreases the amount of time it takes for the mixture to reach trace
113gm potassium hydroxide (90% purity, which is the most common)
250gm extra virgin olive oil
250gm extra virgin coconut oil
3l or less distilled water (this is to be added later). You could make it moon water to enhance the magical properties, but make sure it is in a very clean airtight container, because we don’t want the water to be contaminated in any way.
vinegar, in case of any spills
essential oils, for added magical qualities and scent
crockpot or a big stainless steel pot (make sure it is stainless steel, and not a pure metal, because the lye will dissolve the metal) you can use a stainless steel cauldron, if you’re commited to the aesthetic
another stainless steel pot
stick blender or hand mixer with whisk attachment (all stainless steel)
Safety first, so put on clothes with do not leave much skin exposed. Put on your plastic gloves, safety glasses, and put a bowl of vinegar with a cotton ball next to your work area.
Heat the glycerin to 90°C/200°F in a stainless steel pot. It is okay if the temperature goes slightly higher (to around 110°C). Use a candy thermometer to check the temperature.
Remove from heat, and add the lye to the glycerin. Be careful, because the mixture will sizzle and bubble. You shouldn’t be alarmed, but handle with care, and do not breath in any of the fumes, because they are toxic. If there are any spills, wipe it with vinegar to neutralize the solution. If you get any on your skin, wash it off with running water. If it gets into your eyes, seek medical help immediately.
Give the solution three clockwise stirs, and then one counter clockwise stir, alternating, till the solution is as clear as it can be. During this process, focus on the harshness of lye, and how it will fight and get rid of the magical and the mundane dirt, and, rely on the glycerin to not harm you or what you love.
Heat your oils in the crockpot on low, till it melts, and then turn off the heat. Give the oil three clockwise stirs, focusing on the revitalizing and healing properties of the oil blend, and how it will protect and heal you and all that you love.
Add the lye solution to the oil in the crockpot, and mix it with your stick blender or hand mixer counterclockwise twice, and then only clockwise, till it reaches trace, which it will in a few minutes. You know when the mixture reaches trace, because there will be no oil streaks, and the mixture will be thick, even, and slightly translucent. While mixing, focus on how the solution is meant to fight evil and/or unwanted objects, and protect you and what you choose to protect.
Cover the crockpot, and cook on low for one hour and thirty minutes. Stir clockwise every 15 minutes to release the bubbles, and even the mixture. It is okay if the consistency is weird, because it will all be dissolved at the end, anyway.
Now, for a clarity test. take a bit of the soap, and dissolve it in a good amount of distilled water. It lathers up, which you can prevent by spraying with rubbing alcohol, but check the bottom for any cloudiness. The water should be clear. If there is cloudiness, cook the mixture for maybe half an hour more, and check again.
Once it passes the clarity test, take boiled distilled water, which should be twice the amount of your soap mixture, and dissolve the soap in that water. You could keep heating it on the crockpot till it dissolves. If it is not fully dissolving, or forms a skin on top while cooling, add some more boiled distilled water, till everything is dissolved. Again, during this process, focus on the protection and cleansing aspects of this concoction, and how it drives away what is unwanted, and protects what it serves.
Once the soap has dissolved, you can add your essential oils, and focus on the qualities of your essential oils, and what they add to your soap.
Pour the resulting soap into bottles, and use it however you want. It can be used immediately, but it is better to let it cure for a week.
