From what I've heard, Getzlaf only said "cocksucker"? I've never considered that to be homophobic language. I feel like the fine is fair because it's not really a slur? Like, if Pillar gets suspended 3 games for using the f-word, then I wouldn't suspend anyone for cocksucker. Unless cocksucker is actually a slur and I just haven't realized?
are you LGBT+? because i get that non-LGBT+ people might not get why that is an insult/slur, but it should say something that so far every LGBT+ person i’ve seen react to this has been extremely upset with the outcome. here it kinda really depends on the context too; it was meant as a chirp and as an insult so that’s why it’s offensive and homophobic because what it does is reduce gay people to something shameful, something people “don’t want to get referred” to which is, as you can guess, homophobic. you see the same thing when people bully and attack each other because as i hope you know, in our society gay people are generally considered “weaker” or “less humane” than straight people, so calling someone gay is by a douchebag’s logic the best insult they can come up with. the general environment the NHL has (toxic masculinity and homophobia etc.) kind of “confirms” it as a homophobic slur because i doubt getzlaf meant it as a positive thing.
it might not be 100% the same thing as the f-word (as in the f-word has a long history of being used as an extremely offensive slur against gay people by straight people, something that this exact phrase doesn’t necessarily have; it can be also used in other contexts without being offensive so that’s why people might consider it borderline) but when it’s thrown out there the way it was, it has 100% THE SAME MEANING as the f-word and that’s why it matters–that’s why it’s offensive and homophobic and why using it should result as a suspension, just as using the f-word does. it’s not an ok thing to say and the NHL letting it go by fining him with just 10k is ridiculous and extremely disrespectful to the work the YCP organization has done as well as to every LGBT+ fan of the sport, and everyone involved in that decision as well as the ducks organization and getzlaf himself should be ashamed of themselves.
I am very gay. Interesting perspective, I'll definitely think about the implications before throwing that word around from now on.
yeah. i could see a gay guy throw it at another gay guy as a joke or something like that, but when it’s a presumably straight guy throwing it at another presumably straight guy, intending to degrade his masculinity with it, it’s not ok.
Why does Helena always get the raw end of deals????

Orphan Black Season 3
Finally! Yes, my reactions are going to be as delayed as a pregnant person's period. Delphine's entrance was really... vvv nice. I missed her. B-but... seriously, Cophine breaks up on 3×01? Oh well, there's 9 more episodes for them to like, be back together, right? Right? Fuckit! Don't answer that. Tbh, all I care about is Tatiana Maslany and her many, many, many awesome versions. Oh, I'm a teeny bit curious about Kira too. Bye now!
