A Picture of Freedom, by Patricia McKissack. I remembered from reading this diary years ago that there was a story behind Spicy’s name and was surprised that Clotee didn’t consistently use her preferred name later on. Overall, I appreciate the uniqueness of Clotee’s voice and her character development.
One interesting difference between the book and the TV special (among others) is Hince’s skin tone. I hadn’t realized until now that there was a discrepancy and wonder what the reason was.
