decladam trial hello tell me more

oho TY for asking this is my decladam fic where declan is an erectile dysfunction experiencer (canon TO ME) and he decides to screen for a clinical trial testing a new drug and adam is the physician completing the visit. and also adam is ronan's ex. and also they're very bitchy to each other. i would love to get back to this one because it's genuinely such a HILARIOUS dynamic to write

Adam taps the tip of his pen on the clipboard, lifting his head to meet Declan’s eyes again.  "As of four months ago, Ronan and I are no longer together." Declan knows this, of course, but the way Adam’s mouth twitches minutely as he says it feels like a small victory in an otherwise losing battle. "Now unless you've recently become illiterate or are otherwise unable to consent on your own behalf and you've since designated Ronan as your LAR–" "What the hell–" Declan grits through his teeth, "–is a LAR?" "A legally authorized representative," Adam deadpans, giving Declan a look that would be more withering if not for the enduring air of cool professionalism. He pauses for several seconds, eyeing Declan for longer than seems strictly necessary. "Did you have the chance to review the consent form the coordinator shared with you before your visit, Mr. Lynch?" “Oh, don't, Adam," Declan sneers. Adam simply raises an eyebrow at him, mouth twitching this time in something akin to subtle amusement, not a smile but the lingering threat of one. He looks good, Declan thinks, and immediately hates himself for it.

Omg I'm so glad you asked, I've got plenty of recs. (For those uninitiated, I'm currently working on a master's degree in gothic film as an evolution of gothic literature.)

We gotta start with the classics for good measure, even though I'm sure you've heard of these plenty/read them already:

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë: A young orphan girl takes a job as a governess at a crumbling British manor run by Mr. Rochester, a brooding wealthy man with dangerous secrets.

Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë: Two generations of two families crumble under their toxic relationships with each other and the scheming of a mysterious man called Heathcliff.

We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson: Two young sisters have been ostracized by their New England town after being accused of poisoning their entire family.

The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers: Here's a southern gothic one! It follows six misfits in a small town in 1930s Georgia, as they deal with people's prejudices, their own insecurities, and the rise of fascism.

Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier: A young American woman meets a wealthy older man who whisks her away to his English estate as his new wife, only for her to be plagued by the feeling that the house is haunted by everyone's reverence for his first wife, Rebecca.

Now for the contemporary ones:

Funeral Songs for Dying Girls by Cherie Dimaline: A teen girl accidentally fuels rumours of a haunted cemetery while grieving her mother, and also befriends the ghost of a murdered teen.

Home Before Dark by Riley Sager: A woman inherits the supposedly haunted house that she lived in as a child and which made her father famous for his memoir about the haunting... but when she returns to the house, she uncovers more secrets than she was expecting.

If You're Seeing This, It's Meant For You by Leigh Stein: A former journalist investigates the disappearance of a young influencer who had been staying at a haunted-mansion-turned-hype-house, led by clues in the influencer's online tarot readings.

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia: A young Mexican heiress ventures to a rotting estate above a silver mine to investigate her sister's claims that her new English husband is trying to kill her.

Mister Magic by Kiersten White: An allegory for Mormonism, a woman from Utah returns to investigate the children's show she had been a part of which has become eerie lost media, and reconnects with her fellow child stars, all dealing with their own strange trauma from the show.

Starling House by Alix E. Harrow: A young woman in rural Kentucky unexpectedly gets tangled up with the town's notorious haunted house (and home of her favourite 19th century children's author) and its only heir, Arthur Starling... uncovering dark secrets that rot the town to its core.

A Sweet Sting of Salt by Rose Sutherland: In nineteenth century Nova Scotia, a young midwife helps a reclusive woman with her labour while suspicious of the husband's cruel nature... only to discover the woman is a selkie trapped on land. (This one's gay!)

LITERALLYYYY, it would be so funny, Ronan would throw a fit about it 😂 Ronan's yelling the house down about him being a liar and a poser who's just trying to get attention and Declan's like "JESUS MARY, YOU DON'T HAVE A FUCKING MONOPOLY ON LIKING MEN!!!!!!" and then Ronan calls him a slur, it's a really fun brunch all around

Oh yes! and winding up to the slur he's going to throw out every trite, homophobic line he's ever heard. Just one on top of the other of: 'Everybody wants to be gay nowadays.' 'if you just want attention, say it,' 'The break-up couldn't have been that bad.' 'You'll get over this when you meet the right woman.' 'You don't look gay'

Declan's getting more and more fed up before he explodes and he's like what would [gansey/blue/adam] think if they heard you talking like this?

(He doesn't asked about hennessy because she would have so many mixed feelings and he knows none of them would be supportive because she is ALREADY a mean bisexual)

To which Ronan would say something stupid like 'they don't think you look gay either.'

Just dumbassery all around and a very obvious need for self-reflection (which neither of them will do, but especially not ronan)

But tl;dr is that I think they made Elphaba a lot less angry, sarcastic and resigned in this version by highlighting the hurt/sadness she's feeling more... which I feel they may have done to make her more 'likeable'? But which detracts from the story a bit, according to me.

I still think it was a brilliant adaptation, I just missed that aspect of her character a lot and I do think some moments might have hit harder had they incorporated that element into it.
