Kurt Vonnegut wrote: âWhen I was 15, I spent a month working on an archeological dig. I was talking to one of the archeologists one day during our lunch break and he asked those kinds of âgetting to know youâ questions you ask young people: Do you play sports? Whatâs your favorite subject? And I told him, no I donât play any sports. I do theater, Iâm in choir, I play the violin and piano, I used to take art classes.
And he went WOW. Thatâs amazing! And I said, âOh no, but Iâm not any good at ANY of them.â
And he said something then that I will never forget and which absolutely blew my mind because no one had ever said anything like it to me before: âI donât think being good at things is the point of doing them. I think youâve got all these wonderful experiences with different skills, and that all teaches you things and makes you an interesting person, no matter how well you do them.â
And that honestly changed my life. Because I went from a failure, someone who hadnât been talented enough at anything to excel, to someone who did things because I enjoyed them. I had been raised in such an achievement-oriented environment, so inundated with the myth of Talent, that I thought it was only worth doing things if you could âWinâ at them.
thinking abt how fucked up steam engine boiler explosions can look. theyre just pipes under there
gives me the idea of a ghost/monster engine that looks normal, albeit a bit battered, only to swing their smokebox door open and a myriad of pipes come bursting out like fucked up tentacles
I didnât know a train could be an eldritch horror, but here we are.

Maybe one reason time seems to speed up in adult life is because when your full time job leaves you roughly 5 hours of free time a day plus two days off a week your life turns into a sort of monotony that makes the days blend together and creative pursuits move in slow motion as you can only get to them when other your commitments are done.
When you look back and think damn 2019 wasnât that long ago where did the time go? Job. Your Job took it.
i don't go there but i don't mind the postcards
i feel so dumb when i get done watching a movie and am like âhm ! i had lots of fun watching that ! i liked it!!â and then curiously check the ratings of the movie i just watched and the reviews are all like âabomination of a movie. horrible mess. worst thing i have EVER seen. spits on the face of ALL cinema.â
one of my favorite this american life segments of late is about the people who played orchestra pit for phantom of the opera on broadway and how, like, a sizeable majority of them had literally been playing the show since it opened in 1988 (on broadway. I know it opened in 86 on the west end, you random pedants, but I am specifically talking about broadway musicians) because their contracts stipulated that they'd have jobs throughout the show's entire run... but nobody anticipated that phantom would become the longest-running broadway show of all time.
and none of these people wanted to walk away from a guaranteed job, so very few of them ever quit. they just kept doing the same show eight nights a week... for twenty or thirty years... and by the time it finally closed last year most of these musicians (who had been working together for DECADES) hated each other and really really fucking loathed phantom. I can't stop thinking about it. it's indescribably hellish to imagine but also the funniest thing I've ever heard in my life.
can you imagine.
[ID: excerpt from an article reading: One of my favorite stories, which should drive anyone who has every played in a band crazy-- thereâs this bassoon player who has sat next to the same clarinet player since 1988. Sheâs convinced he plays half a note4 flat on every note heâs every played. He denies this. /]
I wasnât on here during Ace Discourse (thank goodness) but sometimes Iâll read older posts from that time and a few things stick out to me:
The fact that this website is perpetually searching for a queer demographic that they can oppress and say is actually privileged. Trans without dysphoria, aro, polyam, bi, pan, xenogenders, mogai, enben, intersex, afab transfems, etc. I think right now the main target is trans men and transmascs more generally, but itâs the same old cycle and often the same exact people.
The fact that so many of the aphobesâ âargumentsâ were literally recycled homophobia: âYouâre too young to know.â âAsexuality is nsfw.â âAsexuality is just a phase.â âYou just say youâre ace because you think itâs quirky.â
The fact that even after the âdiscourseâ stopped, the perpetrators looked back at it as âthat cringy phase I had as a teenagerâ rather than âthat time I bullied hundreds of random queer people for their identities and forced them back into the closet.â There were no apologies.
That literally no aspec person who has been on the Internet since before that time was left untouched, and that the entirety of online aspec culture has been forever altered from this hate wave.
That it was a gateway into radfem circles.
That some people tried to pit aspecs against mspecs because they thought we were opposites but instead mspecs turned out for aspecs a lot harder than many monosexuals ever did.
I miss our old in-jokes and culture and theyâre not coming back because people are still traumatised about it and the line was broken. Young aces donât know their elders because those elders donât identify themselves anymore. We had such a great and growing community twenty years ago. We had websites full of ace-friendly media recs and people sharing their experiences and soothing each otherâs fears about being left behind as their friends paired off. We had our own meme formats for different types of aspecs, and talked about inclusiveness and accepting everyone who felt like this was a place they belonged. We refined and helped popularise the split attraction model. How many people today even know what I mean when I call myself an ace of spades?
we have to thank our brave soldiers in fandom who write gen fics. we have to thank our brave soldiers in fandom who write character studies and stories with no focus on romance or sex. we have to get on our knees and thank the brave soldiers in fandom who write about minor characters and friendship and family with no focus on romance or sex. i know itâs hard to care about characters in a world that seems to only revolve around ships but i see you. and i love you
everyone say âhappy birthday, mattâ! <3
