We worked really hard today! Windy day, horses running around, calling out etc, and this kid had his game face on. I'm still focusing on riding him more forward and keeping him straighter, and we did a bit of counterflexion in the trot and canter, too. He was much better off my leg today, and I could tell he was genuinely trying hard for me - well, after he got his little throw down out of the way 😂💕 I ended up shortening my stirrups a hole at the start of the ride which is why I look a bit 'showjumper-y', but it was so I could ride a little stronger as my balance has been a bit crap. Polka 🦄 . This this is a post I've thought about writing soo many times, only to put it off and then come back again... And to think I had the cheek to call HIM stubborn, haha! . The honest truth is that we are as stubborn as each other, or I would have listened to the countless people who said I should have pulled the pin years ago. . I just wasn't ready yet 💕 . So the very short version is that Pokes always been a bit tricky. I've always been up for the challenge, but he was never an easy horse to ride - or to keep in work. The good days were amazing, the bad ones were horrid, and over the years we were getting more bad ones than good. . We had everything checked multiple times in recent years - gear, diet, bodywork, feet, teeth, you name it. We changed environment, rider, had a variety of coaches, tried different disciplines, tried spelling, bringing back into work, having a breaker get on, having a grand Prix rider get on, but he just wasn't a happy horse. . Sometimes they just don't want to do it any more. I've gotta give him credit though - he'd try for me, but I knew he wasn't enjoying it, and it wouldn't have been right to force him. . So he's been sitting in the paddock while I figured out what to do - selling was always out of the question, and he looked bored as hell 🙈 I put out an expression of interest to see if anyone else had a lonely horse who needed a companion, and within minutes I had messages coming in. . Today he went off to his beautiful new lease home for 12 months, to just go and enjoy living a life of leisure keeping another horse company. From talking to his new friends this morning - there may be a bit of spoiling on the cards, too 🥰 . I'll miss you little man, looking forward to visiting you in a few months for a great big cuddle 💕 .
