Before summer officially ends, I just have to share the highlight of my first year in Canada! Last May, our group went for two-week tour of British Columbia’s Coast Mountains for our Invertebrates and their Ecosystems field school. Honestly, I was never for the outdoors but I had the time of my life camping and hiking with a bunch of people who share the same passion for science and research. This field school rekindled my curiosity and excitement for learning. I’ve learned a lot. From the lectures to the science journals we read on the road but I think what I enjoyed the most is when we’re hiking and we spot something unusual and an impromptu discussion begins. Definitely experiential learning at its finest. We did a lot! My favourites were hiking in snow (Ancient Forest, PG), exploring a burnt forest, digging up mud flats for worms, and singing Livin’ on a Prayer karaoke haha When I look back, sometimes I can vividly remember the sound of the lake at night, the smell and the warmth of the campfire while we’re singing and playing the guitar, and the feeling of belongingness when we huddle around the fire sharing warm drinks and stories.
