I’m a Student, Get Me Out of Here!
We bade a fond farewell to our U6 Leavers this week; they adopted the theme of ‘I’m a student, get me out of here’, coming to school dressed in jungle wear!
What a very fine bunch of young people they are, and we wish them every success as they embark on their A level exams. I have no doubts that they will make our world a happier, freer and friendlier place.
Today, I am looking forward to accompanying our Fourth Years on their Duke of Edinburgh expedition – even if heavy rain is forecast! Other groups will be going to Warwick Castle, RAF Cosford, Compton Verney, Bletchley Park and Coombe Abbey, for various adventures. At midnight tonight, a coach will depart for Strasbourg for some French and German immersion.
All of these activities and experiences, as well as our extensive co-curricular programme, help to mould our children into the young adults who eventually leave us, well equipped for the next chapter of their lives. Recent research by the University of Edinburgh amongst 1,000 former pupils of Gordonstoun found that non-academic experiences had an “overwhelmingly positive influence on students’ personal growth and development”. Respondents said that such experiences had helped them to grow personally, supported their careers and enhanced their academic studies.
All our pupils who have finished their internal exams would, I hope, agree with the article’s headline in the Times: ‘Pupils thrive when exams take a hike’!
