14 July 1948. First flight of the Supermarine Seagull ASR-1, PA143 from Southampton Water. Flown by test pilot Mike Lithgow. Prototype British amphibious military flying boat and last to be built by the Supermarine company.

The four engined Sunderland flying boat played a pivotal role for Coastal Command in the Battle of the Atlantic during the Second World War in the fight against the German U-boats. Remaining in service with the Royal Air Force until 1959 the Short Sunderland would serve during the Berlin Airlift and Korean War.
