For Fanfic Reasons TM I was looking up the political landscape of Iceland in the 1950's/60's, and came across what I initially thought was a misspelling or typo.

"Iceland benefited massively from its relationship with the United States during the Cold War. The United States provided extensive economic patronage, ... and helped Iceland to victory in the Cod Wars." -wikiapedia

Now I assumed they meant to say Cold War. Until I scrolled down just a smidge, and found;

Now I think it's highly unlikely that my character knows about these events. But they line up timeline-wise too perfectly for me to <i>not</i> include this in some way

Reading about the Cod Wars apparently Iceland’s economy was heavily reliant on exporting fish to Britain following WW2 but there was serious concern that escalating to sanctions on Iceland would push them to support the Soviet Union.

This differs from Australia’s case both in that our economy isn’t quite as deeply reliant on China, and we’re already pretty firmly in the “American Camp” so they’re not exactly scared of making us more pro-American.
