(Poorly drawn) mold under cut!

“Marsh’s drawn worse on purpose for the sake of lore!” I say with delusion knowing I’m just not that great at art yet… ahem anyways.

I made a post about this idea a while back and mentioned maybe turning it into an AU (it had been kind of a theory but idk how much it fits), so I’m turning it into an AU! Basically the contestants’ code (more specifically the older contestants) is starting to rot, as code does when the system operating it changes while the code itself never gets updated. I don’t know if anyone else has done something like this, but it’s inspired by how the older Roblox games are starting to not work as well

I’ll eventually go into more detail about how it affects different objects and the ghosts, but it’s 2am as I’m posting this and I need to sleep. I may not be able to but I need to anyways

Also I know I was originally going to draw Apple with this and it’d be a comic instead of just this, and that may still happen, but I have no idea how to draw Apple and didn’t want to practice since I wanted this posted before I went to bad. So we shall wait

what exactly is dart and how did it make you discontinue sburbsim

Dart is a programming language from google that was originally intended to replace javascript, but eventually settled into just compiling to it.

When I first created SBURBSim , I was literally a jaded researcher and had a decent amount of free time because work was just dead. I coded it in javascript, because I was decently familiar with it and wanted to level up at it.

Then, I got laid off and took a sabatacal or however you spell that to focus on farrago. So i had a lot of time and spoons to try something new.

Hence the Great Refactoring of rewriting sburbsim from javascript to dart. PL was really familiar with it and was a huge help with the process! It had a LOT of benefits, especially because the javascript node ecosystem was a lot less advanced back then.

Eventually I got a job doing javascript full time, and it was bullshit enough (took a lot of time and energy compared to being a researcher) it became increasingly hard to switch languages between day job and hobby coding.

One day, dart just stopped working for me. I did what I could to get it working again (this just happens sometimes with ANY dev environment, sometimes an update of your os, or the programming language, or the ide or whatever breaks something).

But...ultimately I just didnt have the spoons to keep fighting it when i COULD be hobby coding in javascript and have my work skillz augment my spoon level.

So, I no longer can get any of the old dart based systems to work for development.

My newer stuff intentionally uses a different mix of technologies for each product, from complex node/react/webpack systems all the way down to just pure javascript with no third party code.

Since the Zampanio fandom is about things vanishing with time, and i am so diametrically opposed to deleting my own shit, this is my contribution to that part of the vibes .

Each of my new works will rot away from lack of maintenance at different rates. Likely the complex stuff will break in ways I cant run, like lohae did, first.

The rot takes all in the end.
