Hey 👋 it’s been a hot minute since I shared any art.
I got super into Code Vein and decided to revamp/ repurposed my boy Faun to play as the MC.
He used to be more of a fantasy character but I have a strong affinity for goth subcultures and he was destined to be a cyber goth guy 🖤
Be remiss of me to post these and not have my own answers, so Imma take the opportunity to prattle on about my revenant hunter, Stelara. under the cut, because I am very wordy
Where are they from? If not the Frontier, how did they end up there?
They're from a largely human settlement on a different continent from the Frontier. Revenants did have a hand in governance, but the local part of the Association had enough power, politically and militarily, to have a great deal of say in what went on. They joined the hunters, and got sent as part of a force to attempt to reclaim the old castle of the Bureau, which did not go to plan. Things got out of control, there was infighting that they got screwed over by, and now they're stranded in the Frontier. So that's fun!
Do they have any family? Old friends? What, if anything, happened to them?
They had a fairly sizable family, with parents, siblings, siblings-in-law, niblings, a couple cousins, the works. But this is a two-time post apocalypse on the brink of a third, so lifespans aren't...exactly the greatest. They're not the last of their family, but they are one of the last, and they've lost contact with the others largely due to distance - post-apocalyptic mail service isn't the greatest thing in the world, especially in a place like the Frontier
How did they become a revenant hunter in the first place? How long have they been one?
Where they lived there was a lot of emphasis on preserving humanity. Everyone worked towards that, in some way or other. They didn't like the idea of having kids just to have kids, and serving a revenant in a capacity that would probably involve being a blood bag terrified them. Being a hunter was their best option, and their favorite brother was going that route, so they followed along like they always did. They've been one for almost half their life now, so ~15ish years
Why are they a hunter? Have they ever considered abandoning the profession?
At this point, they have no idea what they would do if they weren't a hunter. They don't really see other options, and so many people need help besides. It's nice to be able to do that
Have they ever been affiliated with the Association, or were they always freelance?
They were a part of the local branch of the Association where they grew up, got sent to the Frontier, and then shit went south and now they're freelance because they got named a traitor by some members from a different branch that didn't like that their group was "consorting with revenants". The faction of the Association they were aligned with is much less focused on human superiority than it is on human preservation, so working with revenants isn't new to Stel in the slightest. They do not like the "kill all revenants" faction. It has come to violence before. They will stab someone over it again.
Have they always been hunting alone? If yes, why, and if no, what happened to the people they used to work with?
Stel was trailing after their brother and his revenant partner/lover, so, no, they're used to working in a group. Hunting is hunting, however, and now Stel is the only one left. This fact, and the manner in which it happened, have in no way left them with horrible issues! (lying)
What's their fighting style? Do they switch it up or stick with the tried-and-true? Does this change over time?
One-handed sword, reaper jail, phantom assault. Dart in, get a couple hits, retreat. That's their bread and butter. They're used to someone else taking aggro so suddenly being the tastiest person on the battlefield takes them some getting used to, but their fighting style never really shifts from that - they rotate through swords trying to find the best fit and then further customize their combat forma loadout (thunderclap their beloved) but beyond that? They're good at what they're good at. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
How confident are they in their skills?
Stelara and confidence have never been in the same zip code. They do not see what everyone else sees in them. They're living for the positive validation though, thanks guys?
What's their opinion on revenants before the game starts?
Wary but not hostile. They've had very bad experiences with revenants, but also their sister-in-law is/was a revenant and like. They love their sis even if she made them go "uhhhh hol' up" every so often. Generally as long as a revenant isn't overtly hostile right off the break they're willing to be chill and see where things go.
What are their greatest strengths?
Genuinely a very trusting person, and generally chill enough to get along with just about anyone that isn't actively being a colossal dick to them.
Also a good listener. They're always a little surprised when people start trauma dumping on them, but they try their best to respond with empathy, even if they don't always understand what's going on. They aren't always the best with words in the fact of incredibly emotional things (especially when their own emotions get caught up in the mix) but they typically mean well
What are their biggest weaknesses?
A complete lack of confidence means that there's times where they could help but end up not doing that because they don't recognize that they do in fact have the ability to do so. Also means they're not prone to speaking up and setting boundaries, which can cause all sorts of problems in the long run.
A habit of not thinking things through. Sometimes it's just that they say words that they probably shouldn't have, whoops. Sometimes they're committing time crimes and haven't properly considered what the "find out" phase of this plan will look like until after they're done fucking around. Sometimes they just yeet themselves off a cliff and overestimate just how far that glider system is going to carry them.
Also the fact that they're so trusting can bite them in the ass - it would make them easy to take advantage of, and honestly is the big reason why they don't see what Lavinia is up to coming. Lucky for them most everyone they meet over the course of the plot has good intentions towards them lmao
Talk about a random quirk or habit of theirs!
Stel tends to say "beep beep" before hitting something with the bike. Not even shouting it, just saying it to themselves.
How well do they know the Frontier?
So-so. They're more familiar with the western half than the eastern one - they'd never been in the Corroded Scar prior to going to find Lyle's cocoon. Most of their knowledge is centered around the Forest and how horrifically haunted it is, but they've got a passing familiarity with the City just because once the path to the Forest got collapsed they ended up drifting around there for a couple of years
How did they end up on that island evacuating those people? How did they die?
Literally a case of being in the right place at the right time. They drifted in with their brother and sis-in-law, things went to hell in a handbasket and they all got caught up in it.
Stel got unlucky with a succubus type of enemy. Just a little too slow with a dodge and a spear hit in just the right place to spell their end.
How did they handle the news that they died? What about being told that they were now sharing a heart with a stranger?
Honestly all of that is white noise to Stel because they're more worried about the fact that they're the only hunter that made it off alive. Like yeah okay they died whatever what happened to their brother? His wife? Does anyone know? Did any boats get away to somewhere that wasn't MagMell, is there a chance they survived???? (They did not survive)
They go for a good while without processing their own death and the changes therein, but they do lose sleep over it, because sometimes their brain just decides they need to relive the sensation of having half their heart destroyed right as they're trying to fall asleep. Yay!
Likewise they don't really...realize just what's going on with them and Lou at first. Like, yeah, okay, she did some magic to save them? Neat, thanks? But the longer things go on the more oddities they notice, and it probably should concern them but by that point they've been traveling with Lou long enough that it just...doesn't bother them. She's cool, they trust her, the two of them are like...drift compatible. Two people with independent thoughts and feelings that operate on a similar enough wavelength that they just. Click.
They don't realize just how much they take Lou's presence with them for granted until they're suddenly deprived of it. It's not a fun time. Separation by physical distance they could have handled. But one dying and leaving the other behind? Hell.
How much of their memories did they actually lose during the death-and-revival process? Did anything come back?
The entire series of events that led to their death are more or less gone when they wake up, though they do remember being on the island with other people and really would like to know what happened to those other people.
They do eventually remember the gist of it. It is not a pleasant experience. Much crying was done that night.
Do they trust everyone at MagMell? Why or why not?
Generally yes, because their first inclination is to take people at face value and just assume honesty.
The big exception here is Lavinia...there's kinda a glaring hole in the whole "wake the heroes and slay them" plan and that's the fact that by slaying the heroes they're undoing the seal on the Resurgence. So like. What is the plan for dealing with the Resurgence? Lavinia does not give them a solid answer at any point and they don't really like that but with everyone assuring them that Lavinia has for sure thought that far ahead and absolutely has a plan they shut up and go with it, eventually quietly coming to the conclusion that maybe they're meant to be a part of the new seal. They are wrong, and they regret not insisting on an answer.
How dedicated are they to following Lavinia's orders?
Eeeeehhh so-so. They're pretty good at keeping to the spirit of the whole "save the world" plot but categorically not interested in the "stop committing time crimes, Stelara" part of things. They are not the sort of person that can resist the temptation of "here is a power that will fix things for people you like" even if it has Consequences That May Be Terrible In Nature
What sort of gifts would be their favorites? What would they turn down?
They'd like the retro game and spotless instrument. Oh, no, they can't play the instrument, but they've always wanted to learn, and just the chance to mess around with it is nice! Don't worry, they won't do it where people can hear them until it doesn't sound like a dying animal.
Other things that they'd enjoy are the record, the yellowed book, the paint set, the cookbook, and the t-shirt
They'd refuse the cigar and the coffee. They can't stand the smell of either.
What kind of food do they like? Dislike?
Their favorite is the humble hamburger. They also like things like steak, fried rice, so on so forth.
They do not like things with tomato in it. Or the pork. They're picky.
Do they have any hobbies that aren't related to hunting?
They sketch sometimes, but wouldn't call themselves good at it. Also know a little bit of stitching. They know some leatherworking but have lost access to the tools, so they don't get to do it much. As a kid they messed around with making jewelry out of pretty stones, wire, and whatever sort of cords they could find for things like necklaces and bracelets. They haven't done that in a long time, though. They wouldn't be opposed to picking it back up again...
Did they know anything about the heroes before jumping back into the past to meet them? Ex had they heard of Josee's frenzy, or Holly's medical tragedy? Did that color their expectations going to meet these people?
They'd heard rumors about Holly, it was part of their brief before getting sent to try and reclaim the castle. To say she wasn't painted in the best light is putting it very mildly - there was the implication that the entire tragedy was intentional on Holly's part, which, why would Stel question that? Not like there's any sources to hand that imply otherwise
They know vaguely about Josee's frenzy, mostly in the sense of "this event caused a great amount of destruction and saw a lot of hunters dead trying to save people" (lol) with very little detail on the woman responsible or what happened to her.
The Dawn Chorus and Zenon are both things they've seen mentioned in like, footnotes of history, but nothing that really stuck with them.
Voda house they know of. Everyone knows of Voda house. MagMell was included on the brief, also, though it didn't have an extensive amount of info about the place.
Which partners do they get along with best? Why?
Lyle. Things start off a little rough, with him being mister prickly and all, but the moment he hits them with a "hey that's dangerous!" when they accidentally end up misplacing a hand in acid and then dropping a "this one grew up big and strong" when they see one of those nectar plants Stel realized that this man was, in fact, a certified soft boi. 100% squish by volume. As soft-hearted as they are. And at that point that was it they're friends now Stel has decided, and, well, earnestness and understanding pays dividends. Then the FeelingsTM get involved and it gets more complicated, but it's okay, they end up dragging each other out of their narrative dooms and helping each other pick themselves up and live to the fullest, it's a happily ever after. Eventually.
Also Craig. It's not quite that he's their new dad but he's def in a mentor sort of role for them. He's one of the easiest for them to talk to because somehow he just manages to give them the impression that it doesn't really matter what they hit him with he's not gonna judge or freak out. And they test that theory a few times.
Also also Lou and Noah, but more on that in the next answer lol
Which partner do they have the strongest platonic bond with?
I'm not sure Lou entirely counts as platonic but their bond with her isn't romantic or familial, so I guess this is what's left. The two are pretty much drift compatible - they aren't a hivemind but generally have a good idea of what the other is thinking and feeling just by being close. They also are very ride-or-die for one another - neither is going to abandon the other by choice. They're a team! A packaged deal, do not separate.
Noah also. Just the fact that he showed Stelara a great deal of trust and readily expressed confidence in their abilities when they were just coming off of their actual, literal death and the death of some of the most important people in their life really stuck with them. They needed it and hadn't realized they had. They're willing to go to the ends of the earth to help Noah out and he's very good at gently knocking them upside the head and reminding them that they need to take care of themselves, too (he got a lot of practice doing that to Valentin lmao). He teaches them how to cook more than just the basics, and they try their best to find recipes he might find interesting so they can try them. Lou is their official taste-tester, it's a good time!
Which partners do they get along with the least? Why?
Josee. Getting pinned and drained hit a very big trauma button for Stel, and then the whole engagement thing did not make it better. They're never mad at Josee persay, they can more or less see why things went the way they did, but there's still a level of discomfort that's just. Not going to go away easily. Not to mention Josee is very boisterous and also very overt with the petnames to the point that Stel legit thought the whole "engagement" thing was just her fucking with them. Then they got hit with the Blind Hero and oh, shit, Josee's feelings are for realsies, except Stel is not interested at all and frankly Josee coming on as strongly as she does just puts Stel off even more. And then there's the whole added layer of guilt, because Stel knows she's going to kill this woman, and their struggle with setting boundaries, and they end up just...letting Josee continue on when they really should have had a serious conversation and put a stop to it, because "if I'm going to kill her I can at least let her have this, right?" Josee is, thankfully, not stupid and can see that something's going on here, and doesn't take terribly long to puzzle out that her feelings aren't reciprocated. Post 3rd ending she does gently force Stel into a serious conversation so they can clear the air. It's a rough one, but it needed to happen, and things between the two become much easier once it's done.
Lise sorta gets avoided just because she's Josee's sister (and the whole thing with her sidequest does not help) but Josee does talk things over with her so she's not in the dark about what's going on and doesn't take it personally.
Iris is sort of in the friend-of-a-friend zone, with the mutual friend being Lou. It's not that Stel actively dislikes Iris, it's that they just don't hang out or chat that much. Perfectly amicable though.
Lavinia and Stel just have a lot of tension between them because like. Lavinia is Not Being Honest and even Stel can see it so like. There is a fundamental level of trust that is missing and it kinda shows. Generally respectful of one another, but that's about as far as things go. And then Stel finds out that Lavinia was the one that arranged the raid that destroyed MagMell and killed Noah before they intervened, and that's it, they'll never be friends. Especially not after Lavinia Does The Thing.
How good are they at keeping the time travel thing a secret?
They're pretty good about not saying anything that would obviously give them away, but that's as far as it goes. Frankly the only reason no one confronts them about it is because they all figure that Stel will tell them if/when they can.
At one point during the Pioneer Castle raid they end up sharing with Lyle that they're about the same age as him (technically they're a couple years younger, but still very close considering he's a revenant). Only, someone else asks them their age during a later time period, and they give the real answer which is. The same age. Lyle overhears it. Whoops.
The big giveaway they never stop to think about is the bike. The one that's in pieces in MagMell being worked on by a guy that is happy to tell everyone that will listen that he's giving it to Stel once it's done. And they're zipping around on it and giving everyone, including the likes of Valentin and Noah, who live at MagMell, free rides. Whoopsie.
How forthcoming are they with people about their own past? Is there someone in particular they find easier to talk about it with, or something they just refuse to?
Stel doesn't tend to talk about themselves. It doesn't seem to occur to them to share personal information unless someone specifically asks them for it, and even then how much they're willing to share depends on the person asking, the subject, and the alignment of the stars. They have a tendency to share details that are relatively mundane or harmless and completely skip over the stuff that's actually pivotal to their life story, though sometimes they will make vague references to such events that will get people around them going "you gonna elaborate on that?????" and Stel goes "nah"
Lou is the easiest to talk to, she just...doesn't trip up their anxiety about oversharing and/or saying The Wrong Thing. Craig is probably next easiest, then Lyle, Holly, and Noah. Valentin has a talent for getting things out of them without them realizing that's what he's doing until it's too late
How do they try to handle their duty? Do they try not to think about how they're going to have to kill the heroes they're befriending, or is that always in the back of their mind? How well do they bounce back from the hero fights?
Stel tries very hard to pretend nothing is wrong and "this is fine" their way through the whole finding the key thing but they never really manage to put the fact that they're going to have to kill the heroes with their own hands out of their head. It's even worse once they've already done it, because now they can remember doing it, how the heroes responded, what killing them felt like. The 2nd round is both better and worse - better, because there's the reassurance that they did help, and having other people also mourning the heroes with them, but worse because the reassurances that it's okay kinda backfire and feed their guilt even more and it's just. Not a fun time.
Their method of recovering from the hero fights is to go into the free exploration era - essentially running to a time period where they haven't killed their friends yet. It...sort of works.
Do they have any keepsakes from their friends, past or present?
The coat that is way too big for them that they've constantly got slung over their shoulders was their big brother's. It is a tragic keepsake.
Beyond that, they have little odds and ends. Holly found out they love stars and gave them a little star ornament like the ones that hang from her...halo...thingy. Noah got them a set of travel cookware that they love to pieces. Valentin found a couple of books for them, and also put a forma on their glasses to help keep them clean and undamaged even with their career being what it is. Lyle made a small painting for them that is one of their greatest treasures.
And of course there's the Chorus dagger, and also Josee and Noah's rings. They take good care of all of those - yes, even Josee's ring. They might be uncomfortable with how some things with Josee are, but they do genuinely like her as a person, and it's nice to have some sort of physical thing from her even if they don't ever intend to go through with the whole betrothal thing. They kinda regret not asking for a copy of the photo of them and her, honestly - they don't have any pictures of them and their friends, and they end up wishing they did.
How good are they at thinking through the consequences of the timeline changes they're making? Do they try to plan for things that might go wrong, or are they just winging it and hoping for the best?
Long term consequences? What are those? Consequences don't exist until they are biting Stel in the ass. They're 100% flying by the seat of their pants here.
What's their opinion on the Association of the past? On Gobbo and Oskar?
They assume that it's like the Association they know, in that there's factions within it, and some are actually interested in helping people and some are just assholes.
Gobbo comes off as suspicious even to them, though they don't realize just how far he's willing to go.
Oskar they actually get along with, mostly, the handful of times they run into him. After all, just because Gobbo's sus doesn't mean Oskar is in on it, right? Hunters can get taken advantage of, as well. Then Stel turns up to prevent Josee's frenzy and finds out that no, Oskar is also an asshole, and now the two are nemeses. Or at least they've earned the title of Oskar's nemesis, mostly they just want him to piss off and leave them alone.
Do the changes they make to the timeline have any direct effect on them? Ex a family member that died is now alive, or their hometown is un-destroyed, that sort of thing
They'd hoped that shifting things around would somehow un-doom their brother, but no, it just means that now there's hunters in the area that really want them in specific dead. Thanks, Oskar!
As their family is outside the Frontier, most of the changes they enact don't change their family situation much. Perhaps someone that studied at the Sanatorium moves on and ends up saving the life of one of their family members, but because of the distance and communication issues, they wouldn't actually know for sure...
Is their any event from their own past they would go back and change if given the chance?
They'd want to save their older brother if at all possible...but considering the circumstances, they know it's not possible. Preventing the Upheaval is the closest they can get to undoing that particular tragedy, but then it's not really their brother, because he'll have lived a completely different life, so on so forth
How do they handle the death of all revenants? Did they see it coming? Why do they take Zenon's offer to try again?
Badly. Their initial reaction is despair, followed by denial, then more despair as they go to every settlement in the Frontier and confirm that yes, all the revenants really are gone. And then the humans that are left keep looking to them for answers and guidance and - Stel is not a leader. They've never been good at it, they don't like doing it - having that pressure on top of all the grief and guilt that they'd been trying so hard to ignore and the new wave of grief and guilt from not being able to see what Lavinia was going to do coming and stop it, well... between the depression and the stress, Stel doesn't last more than a handful of years past that event. They try their best. They really do. But they're not equipped for this, and the inability to process anything and the sudden and violent removal of the support structure they'd managed to build for themselves was just too much for them to handle.
Zenon's offer is a reset button, an escape from the constant despair, of course they go for it. They have no idea what they're going to do - they don't see a way where confronting Lavinia ends well - until the bond turns up, and then they're all in on preventing the Upheaval. No hesitation, no plan, just pure 100% fuck it, we ball
Did they plan on becoming part of the seal, or was that a heat-of-the-moment decision?
Stel did not have any solid ideas about what they were going to do to prevent the Upheaval beyond "let Zenon do his thing" and "punch Valentin in the face". It wasn't until Lou had her meltdown that they came to the conclusion that they'd be part of, if not the entire, seal. Someone has to be sacrificed, right? They were tired of being the one left behind. Let them be the one that goes down - they're already destroying the world they come from. Only right that they go with it.
They're not in a good headspace during that whole thing.
How do they feel about changing the timeline and essentially erasing the world they lived in? Do they regret it in any capacity?
Generally they're pretty good about keeping in mind that they did, in fact, prevent apocalypse no2 and the impending one from their time, and that the overall improvement to quality of life across the entire everywhere is a justifiable reason for doing what they did. Not to mention saving their friends.
On particularly bad days, their thoughts might spiral along the train of "there must have been people that don't exist now because of the complete change of circumstances" and that's never a fun time, but Lou is particularly good at heading this one off.
How well do they adjust to the new timeline?
It's rough going at first. They are so lost. Everything is different, even more so than just going to the past, and it's. It's culture shock. Not to mention them being at war with themselves over checking to see if there's a version of their family in the new timeline, and if that family is happy (yes and yes), and then struggling with just. Being displaced. They didn't plan on making it out of the sealing spire alive and now that they have, they have to deal with all sorts of things. And Stel does not like dealing with their own problems, no sir.
They get there, though. One step at a time, thanks to the friends they made along the way.
Do they ever forgive Valentin and Lavinia? Why or why not?
With Valentin, there wasn't actually a lot of anger - the method by which they found out about his whole Thing prompted more empathy than anything, so they don't really hold a grudge. Honestly, they have a whole spiral about if some of the weird shit he was saying was him literally telling them what he was doing in some weird roundabout way and they just. Missed it. And if they hadn't missed it could they have pulled him out of the pit he'd trapped himself in? They are still going to punch him in the face, but that's because they think he's being a dumbass and needs a fist-shaped reality check to the face. They'll take his glasses off before hand and hug him after, it's fine. They just really need him to stop being stupid and talk to people about his problems (they are pointedly ignoring their own hypocrisy)
Lavinia is much easier to be angry with, on account of not only did she Do The Thing, she also used them to get to the point where she could Do The Thing, and she did all that with the raid on MagMell, and didn't support Valentin when he really fucking needed it holy shit. Like. Woman, what the actual hell. She is a very convenient target for all the anger. All the same, Stel did spend enough time with her to recognize that Lavinia really did want to do what was best for the world, ruthless and morally atrocious methods aside. So like. They won't stab her when she's neutralized as a threat by Zenon. And when she calls to them to get them to save Lou, they'll answer and listen, because yeah they do want to save Lou. But they're never working for her ever again, and would rather not deal with her. Maybe one day, after they've had years to unpack All Their Shit and work through it in a healthy way, they'll sit down and talk things out with her. But it will take a while.
What do they do when all the dust settles and their duty is done? How do they handle peace?
There's a very nasty depressive episode on the front end of it because, like, they have no idea what to do now. They've spent pretty much their whole life following someone else, so now that they get to chose their own path they have a nasty case of decision paralysis and just sort of end up doing nothing. If it weren't for the fact that they have a lot of friends that care very much, they probably wouldn't have worked their way out of it.
They end up moving into Pioneer Castle and sticking with the Chorus, just helping continue to build up the Scar into a thriving country all its own. And, you know, helping Lyle hunt down any blood bag traffickers that might try to pull something in the Frontier, or going on the occasional horror-hunting mission. They could be a more public figure to help with human-revenant relations but they really don't want the scrutiny, so they only make rare appearances as "the hero hunter who helped seal the Resurgence".
They also end up in a proper official relationship with Lyle, to which the rest of the Chorus goes "well it's about damn time!"
