SETTLER (sys term)
------------------------------------
Definition:
A settler is a headmate who fronts to settle the body in order to sleep. This can be considered a subset or mix of soother, caretaker and comfiture. They may front every night or just when triggered (for example our settler only fronts if we are too upset or paranoid to sleep. other settlers may be triggered by nightmares or insomnia). Settlers don't have to actually sleep, just calm the body enough for another headmate to be able to rest, but they may also be sleepers.
Any system may use this role, it is not exclusive to systems who have trouble sleeping / staying asleep but was coined with systems who have insomnia and/or frequent nightmares in mind
------------------------------------
Tasks they may do:
calm the body / headmate in front either with their presence or by doing a soothing activity such as playing soft music or using comfort items
help the body to feel more sleepy
remove any distractions which are stopping the system from sleeping (example: turn off lights)
adjust the body's surroundings so they can be more comfortable (example: getting a blanket if its too cold)
get into a more comfortable position
find a safe and comfortable place for the body to sleep
A headmate doesn't have to do all of these tasks to be able to use this role, they just need to settle the body in some way in order to sleep. The tasks performed by a settler will depend on the system's circumstances, how often / why they front, etc.
