Mark S turned around to be with Helly because he’s Mark Scout.
A Mark S who could leave Helly behind is a Mark Scout who could leave Gemma behind. Mark is a man who cannot grieve, is a man who will always turn around. Mark S is born of this inability to grieve - a Mark S who is capable of leaving Helly is a Mark S who could never have come into being.
‘If I was Orpheus I wouldn’t turn around’ if you wouldn’t turn around you wouldn’t have made it to Hell in the first place
me every time i remember mark s said “the equator? is that like a building?”

By the way. This contrasts every single other severed pairing on the show, just so you know.
“This is a stranger” and yet he already knew his outie had a wife, unlike Irving with Burt or Mark Scout with Helly- or Dylan with Gretchen (afaik) and even with that…even with that it’s not enough to find “any feeling of connection”
In contrast there is, undeniably, feeling AND connection in all the other severed relationships.

cold harbor theory
based off these two clues that people have been piecing together about what's in cold harbor:
1. something related to mark and gemma's baby crib, based on the name of the firm that made it being very similar to cold harbor (col d'arbor)
2. something related to dying, based on gemma being asked what she'd be more afraid of if caught in a mudslide
i'm beginning to think cold harbor contains gemma's biggest past traumas.
it could be a room where she or her innie experiences both her miscarriages and the car crash and other huge traumas that are more than the annoyance of the dentist or writing cards, that have given her ptsd and evoke the strongest responses to stressful stimuli lumon wants the chip to be able to block.
