person on reddit who said the pitt is an hbo show with a cw fanbase deserves a pulitzer i think about it all the time... just saw sum1 complaining ab how langdon/whittaker are rewarded for risky behaviour whilst their female colleagues of colour have to fight to have their decision-making respected.... YES that is because the pitt takes place in the same universe as EARTH... where we LIVE in a SOCIETY where that is the NORM and it’s FUCKED UP and the show making you recognise that is ENTIRELY THE POINT

(hope u dont mind @whoreiorcats but i thought id respond in a full post cuz i ended up writing an essay on my lunch break)

first of all - thankyou for responding to a perspective you disagree with in such a considered & insightful way. rare for tumblr dot com! i am appreciative!

i think you’re bang-on about the tonal issues that come from oscillating between subtlety and a lack thereof. this came up a lot for me when i first finished the show & went online only to be surprised that the online reaction to robby was... not what i had been expecting!

as a big fan of house md, i love a dysfunctional, HR-unfriendly, motorcyclist doctor - and so do most fans of that show. but its whole thematic conceit turns on dissecting overly simplistic ideas of morality; i can think of countless episodes where the story engine is literally just “X good thing cannot be as moral as it/they claim to be”. whenever they tackle any issue, you can guarantee the conclusion will ultimately be “well actually this shit is pretty complicated”. very rarely do they vindicate one specific POV, or suggest a clear distinction between right and wrong.

but in the case of the pitt... when you have so many This Message Brought To You By moments, when you position your show as a valid arbiter of morality instead of always playing some version of devil’s advocate... well, your fans can never be in a position to advocate for the devil.

it’s becoming more common for viewers (especially the Very Online) to assume that depiction = endorsement, and whilst i’ve never been much for that POV as it’s... bizarre and/or puritanical... i take your point that it becomes very difficult to discount this assumption when that is, quite often, exactly what the pitt is doing.

as a house md enjoyer i love the confrontation between mohan/robby because, firstly, for robby to distinguish having panic attacks at work about WORK issues (totally reasonable) vs PERSONAL issues (hysterical and unprofessional) is some genuinely hilarious mental gymnastics that highlight his dysfunction & hypocrisy. and, with that flawed reading in mind, it becomes weirdly cathartic to see mohan be at the receiving end of an explosive emotional response she had almost no part in.

i feel similarly about that scene as i do the season 3 succession episode where logan’s lowkey having an alzheimers moment and explodes at shiv for fussing around him. i’ve had men of similar ages explode at me for no reason in both professional and familial contexts (who hasn’t), and seeing those situations on-screen, when it’s so clear they’re in the wrong, can be comforting, in a weird way. that being said, i am totally aware that this is how i personally read the show! and having to articulate that has made me even more aware of it, so thankyou!

i completely accept your point that it can also very much NOT feel like this, ESPECIALLY relative to those moments when the show DOES actually choose to look down the barrel of the camera and say, We Live In A Society.

i never gave much thought to those moments on their own, because of how out-of-step they felt with everything else. (and i also didn’t know about those cut scenes!) but you’re right - if a show starts drawing some definitive lines in the sand, it inevitably has to decide where its own characters fall upon those lines. and when the show doesn’t take a hard line against robby’s prejudice & hypocrisy the way it recognises other issues, one would naturally start to question whether it knew they were even there to begin with.

i guess my frustration from the first post was just a reaction to the flattening of this type of nuance online and the struggle to find anyone actually having these conversations. but an eye for an eye, etc, lol. thankyou for actually having this discussion!!!
