He towered over Oliver during the day, giving the hatter a sense of insecurity. At the same time, as Oliver gazed up at his slender frame and broad shoulders, he felt safer than he ever did before. At night, they measured up almost perfectly. However, the same sense of security still lingered. Their fateful meeting at the pub one weekend proved that they had more in common other than simply being exactly the same height.
Cole ruffled his golden blond hair and shot Oliver a smile. "I'm telling you, green is my absolute favorite color!"
Oliver shook his head and smoothed out the shoulder of his emerald jacket. "You're just being a copycat." He took a long swig of his whiskey.
"I also really like tea parties." Cole nodded, tossing back the last of his pale ale. "And tiny tea cakes to boot."
"Shut up." Oliver glared at him.
"You-" Oliver began but relaxed his features. Cole's clear blue eyes sliced through Oliver's London fog ones as he paused. With a gentle smile, Oliver spoke up. "You heard about my tea parties and you want to join in, is that it?"
"You host tea parties???" Cole's brows shot up.
Oliver memorized the new facial feature as fast as he could before it went away. The new-look was intriguing to him, yet, he couldn't pinpoint why.
"Of course. I am the mad hatter. Did you not read any of the wonderland books?"
"Nah," Cole smiled, waving the waitress over to them. "I wasn't big on reading. I was a more hands-on kind of guy. Played outside a lot."
“Do I look like the joker?”
Oliver opened his mouth to speak but waited until he was done ordering drinks. "...and another whiskey on the rocks for this fellow." He ended the statement with a wink to the young lady.
She couldn't contain the smile that grew on her lips before she nodded and walked away.
"I can order my own drinks. I have a running tab." Oliver peered at Cole through slits in his lids.
"This one's on me." Cole clapped his hand on Oliver's back and shot the hatter a dazzling smile.
"Hm," Oliver looked away from his gaze, feeling his chest tighten. He'd only known Cole for a few weeks, yet there was a sense that he'd known him for far longer.
Oliver cleared his throat. "You will have to come over sometime so I can show you what a real tea party is."
"Ah, that sounds splendid. When would you like me to show up?" Cole removed his hand from Oliver slowly, moving to rest it on the space between them on the wooden table.
"Let's do tomorrow afternoon." Oliver watched the waitress bring their drinks to the table while staring at Cole.
Cole ruffled in his pocket for some golden pieces the black army allotted him and handed them to the waitress.
"So, you want me to come over while you're fun-sized?." Cole squeezed the lime slice into his beer bottle with a huge smirk on his lips without glancing over at him.
"Of all the things! Tch-" Oliver squared his shoulders. "A tea party at night has other implications."
"I can pretend I don't see the implications," Cole stated matter-of-factly.
"Okay." Oliver turned his head away, wishing the dust of blush that colored his cheeks could be controlled. "Tomorrow night then. Come by after dinner for dessert and tea."
Cole wiped his hands on his navy slacks and nodded. "Sounds like a date."
Later, Oliver waited for the sun to dip beyond the horizon before setting the table. Blanc helped him make a plethora of various desserts but was off to observe an unexpected happening with the Red army. At least that's what Blanc said while hopping into the carriage and winking at Oliver.
It didn’t help Oliver’s nerves that Blanc was gone, but then again neither did anything else that day. He tried hard to complete his work so he wouldn’t have much left to do. Successfully he got to a cozy stopping point in his project and continued on with his tea party execution.
Just as Oliver placed down the last tray of tiny cakes coated in green pistachio frosting, a new carriage arrived behind him. He squared his shoulders and touched his hat to make sure it was in place.
Cole hopped out of the carriage before it fully stopped, as if he’d done it a thousand times, and beamed a smiled at Oliver.
“‘Evening, Oliver,” Cole shouted over the short distance.
“Yes,” Oliver retorted, wondering if he should move to greet him or take a seat. “Good evening.” He chose to take a seat at the end of the rectangle table.
“Oooh! Look at all these goodies! Oliver, you didn’t have to go out of your way for me.” Cole playfully winked and handed him a box that Oliver hadn’t noticed him hiding behind his back.
“What's this?” Oliver pinched his brows.
“It’s just something for our tea party date.” Cole smiled down to where Oliver sat.
“It’s not a date,” Oliver grumbled. “And you didn't have to bring me anything.”
“Yeah yeah,” Cole placed the box in front of Oliver and took a seat next to him. “Just open it, will you?”
Oliver cracked open the box and scrunched his nose. “Carrot cake?!” He looked entirely offended.
“No, Genius.” Cole teased. “It’s actually a spice cake. Um, Since you never get to eat Blanc’s delicious carrot cakes I made you one without the carrots and added gingersnap.”
“Oh.” The wind rushed the table, tousling Cole’s hair. ”It’s… thoughtful…” Oliver put the lid back on the sheet cake box and set it to the side.
“I just don’t want you to feel left out.” Cole peered up between his blond locks. His face was serious with no hint of a tease. Cole’s straight tresses hung low on his brow, in need of a trim, while he relaxed back into the chair. The twinkle lights lining the trees cast a dim shadow over his face. Oliver hadn’t realized he was staring, watching Cole’s features become more angled with the shadows.
“Now pick a teacup and I’ll start a fresh pot.”
Did yall know that I love Oliver? :3
