Suprise College Roomie

Biting down on my pencil in my mouth I moved my fingers across the mouse reading over the essay I was working on for my class tomorrow I was so deep in thought that I didn't hear my roommate say anything until they shake my arm pulling me from my trance. "There's someone at the door for you. Says he's your boyfriend." Spinning away from my computer I jumped to my feet flinging the door to our dorm open seeing Peter Parker for real standing in the doorway. He flashes me that dorky grin that I loved throwing his arms away from his sides almost making the backpack fall from his shoulder. "Happy 3 year anniversary babe!" Flinging my arms around his neck I giggled allowing him to twirl me around in circles for a few seconds finally setting me on my feet again.

"What are you - how are you here, Peter. I mean this is amazing!" He rests one hand on my waist while his other tucks hair behind my ear grinning still at my shocked reaction. Peter decided to wait on college since the city needed him to be Spider-Man. So we had to make the long distance thing work because he never wanted to keep me from living my life since he got bit by a spider years ago. "Well I know you've been busy with school. So I thought I would come here and suprise you for the weekend." He responded before my roommate Lizzie comes to lean into my side winking in his direction. "So this is the famous Peter you talk on the phone hours with huh. I gotta say he's cute roomie. Hi I'm Lizzie." She stuck her hand out so he shakes it chuckling with a nervous smile.

Brushing my hands down my sweatshirt I pushed them inside the pocket staring over my shoulder seeing that I still had some assignments to do. "Peter, I've got some work but we can go out later once I finish stuff." He nodded sitting his bag on the ground flopping down on my bed watching me slip onto my computer chair working for about another hour. Changing into a nicer shirt and some blue jeans we decided to just take a night stroll around the campus since I was tired. "I don't think I can thank you for coming out here anymore tonight, Peter. This is just so sweet." He draped an arm over my shoulder kissing my forehead. Stopping in my tracks I wrapped my arms around his neck kissing him slowly until he rests his forehead against mine. "You don't have to thank me, Y/n. I'll always come see you because you're my girl. Spider-Man or just Peter, I'll always choose you."

long time no see! i can’t believe we’re nearing the end of december already. it feels like just yesterday it was march and i was glad to have two weeks off from school. i’m in high school on a semester schedule and our finals aren’t until the end of january (and my school isn’t even requiring finals this year) so i haven’t felt the pressure of that yet but i know it’s coming. in other news, so far i’ve been accepted to two (2) universities of the six (6) i applied to and i won’t hear back from the others for some time so i’m feeling really happy about that! these notes are from a virtual webinar i attended today for one of the remaining schools and i really felt like i’d fit in there! super excited to hear back from them. i hope everyone is having a pleasant and safe december!

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, nearly all colleges are currently closed to students and visitors. This situation might be particularly frustrating to high school seniors (and their parents) who would like to tour the schools they’ve been admitted to in order to make the most informed admissions decision possible. Also, spring break is traditionally the time that high school juniors and sophomores would visit various college campuses to get a sense of student life on the campuses they’re thinking of applying to. But not this year. Since you cannot visit colleges and universities in person at the moment, here is a list of virtual tours you can join in lieu of an in-person visit. We particularly like Campus Reel because the videos are typically produced by students, not by the school or a professional production company.

Developing a great list of colleges takes time, research, and a whole lot of self-reflection.

Throw in a global pandemic and remove the prospect of being able to visit a school in person, and knowing how to research colleges can be even tougher.

But is it impossible? Not at all.

In fact, given the costs associated with visiting colleges (flights, hotels, gas, time off from school or work), visiting campuses isn’t realistic for everyone.

Keep in mind that thousands of students develop balanced college lists and even commit to attending their college without ever stepping foot on campus.

In the age of Instagram and TikTok and with the explosion of free online resources, plus a growing commitment this year by colleges to provide virtual visits in the era of COVID-19, there’s never been a better time to research colleges from the comfort of your phone or laptop.

So here are four tips and resources to help you do just that.

1️⃣ A Practical Guide to Creating a Great College List: Start here. It’s got tons of resources and takes you step by step through a process to figure out:

What do I want out of my college experience?

Where should I start researching?

How do I organize all my research?

2️⃣ Virtual College Tours Master Spreadsheet: This awesome resource includes links to tons of virtual tours for over a thousand colleges. It’s a great quick-reference resource that links to schools’ official YouTube channels, plus CampusReel, YOUniversityTV, and YouVisit pages for hundreds of colleges. (Many thanks to Rebecca Chabrow for pulling this together.)

3️⃣ This master spreadsheet of virtual college admissions events. Kelly Fraser at Green Apple College compiled this great spreadsheet that lists the virtual college admissions events and opportunities being hosted by hundreds of colleges. It’ll save you having to dig through each college’s website.

4️⃣ CampusReel.org: Lots of college virtual tours can be a bit, well, just okay. You’ll get insight into how one particular college’s biology program is ranked number whatever in the United States, or hear about its 15:1 student-to-faculty ratio. But CampusReel tours are led by current students, usually on their phone (selfie-style), so you get invited right into their dorm room, classroom, or dining hall.

So there you have it. Throw on some headphones, put on your favorite playlist, and get lost.

i got accepted at northwestern university and cried for 15 minutes. i’m eager to receive my financial aid package to see if i can attend, but if all works well im so excited!!!
