In the beginning, America's entire worldview was made of two people: himself and his older brother/father figure, England. Everybody else was quite inconsequential. America would spend time with other people and even around human children -- he had always been extroverted and friendly -- but they didn't truly matter to him. (Besides, the lesson he learnt from Davie was that getting so close to humans wasn't any good, they just didn't last long enough. They were fine for some moments of fun, not for long-lasting friendships.) The only person who truly mattered, who was truly by his side, was England.

When he was first introduced to Canada, America was quite wary about the entire matter. He had never wanted another brother -- what he wanted was England's undivided attention. Canada may be a threat to it. However, England introduced Canada almost as a gift to America so, instead of throwing a tantrum, America held his judgement for a bit and observed. It soon became clear that Canada wasn't a worthy competitor for England's affection -- America was always louder and more noticeable, and as a consequence, England still paid more attention to him -- so a tantrum wasn't needed and America never complained about Canada's presence. Warming up to Canada still took America some time, however. For a long time, he considered him almost like a plaything rather than a person -- something England had gotten for him to curb his loneliness and America could play with only to discard him when he was bored. Canada being very meek and hesitant didn't help with that, nor did the language barrier. Eventually, after they stared being able to communicate better, America learnt to perceive Canada as a person and became very fond of him, appreciating him for what he was and not just what he could give America. America doesn't even remember that he initially dismissed Canada that way.
