Guard rant :/ (It's long, sorry)
Practices like last night's really make me wonder why I put up with my coaches and why I do guard...
We finally got the opener drill and we were all thrilled, especially the newbies. Out of 28 guard girls, 17 of us are new to marching band (including myself, plus 13 girls from cadet winterguard and 1 brand new girl) so that's a LOT of people to teach how to find drill spots and I can understand our 2 coaches getting frustrated with it since they expect the older vets (7 of the 9 girls from Varsity Winterguard are on weapon line, along with myself and our captain's little sister) to help, but they never do. Since the older girls know what they're doing, they apparently think it's okay to talk between learning each new set and then we have a flag of 21 girls (which contain all the cadet girls, 2 varsity girls, the newbie, and 3 JV winterguard) the girls from cadet think it's okay to talk between drill sets and I don't know why because NO ONE SHOULD BE TALKING UNLESS YOU'RE ASKING OR GIVING HELP AND OUR COACHES HAVE EXPLAINED THIS TO US MANY MANY MANY TIMES!! Yet somehow, the only girls who understand this are me, our captain, and the 4 super shy girls...So after ending practice 5 minutes early our coach tells us to run 2 extra laps around our guard field (which is the same size as our football field) I, being the girls with the most sensitive stomach ever, was holding throw up in my throat the whole time and trying to not pass out, so I had one of my best friends (who's a vet) running with me just in case...after that treacherous run, or coach talked to us and said "we are one guard, if one person has to run you ALL have to run", "Dumas (our band director) will not deal with the talking and you're lucky you only had to run 2 extra laps. You girls should've been running the whole practice", "If you don't want to deal with us getting mad and can't help the talking, don't come back because we don't want yo hear then."
BIGGEST PROBLEMS I HAVE WITH THIS:
1) If we are one guard, why is the slightly-overweight girl with anger issues not running and is allowed to walk? Ask anyone, I have anger problems and I' over-weight too, so why can't I walk???
2) WHY CAN'T OUR COACHES CALL OUT THE GIRLS WHO ARE TALKING AND HAVE THEM RUN AND DO PUSH UPS???????!!!!!!
Face it, we areNOTone guard if you let one girl walk 2 laps (sometimes only 1), if you can't call out the girls talking, and you play favorites. (Our coaches favor the weapon line girls most, and of course I'm a weapon and I hate the attention) And no one can talk to our coaches about it because the last girl that did is no longer on the guard and can't return -.-
When our coach said the thing about not returning, I was so close to leaving my flag and sabre there (seeing as the rifle is mine) and not looking back...the only that stopped me was the fact I love colorguard too much and can't imagine life without it.....And to me, that's just weak of me to do.
