Los Natas: München Sessions (2005)

It's a long way from Germany to Argentina (unless international soccer games are involved), but Germany was precisely where Argentina's Los Natas found themselves 20 years ago, recording a unique, double-disc release known as the München Sessions.

Having transcended their Kyuss-imitating origins (see '98's Delmar and '99's Ciudad de Brahman) to develop a distinctive style of their own on '02's stunning Corsario Negro, Los Natas had pushed their sonic experiments even further on '03 and '04's twin Toba Trance sets.

Described by the trio as "free rock," this new hybrid infused the group's stoner/desert/psych/space rock foundations with improvised jams, hypnotic drones, and global musical influences ranging from Andalusian strains to Indian ragas.

As a result, the München Sessions provided a rare opportunity for vocalist and guitarist Sergio Ch., bassist Gonzalo 'Crudo' Villagra, and drummer Walter Broide to revisit their catalog through this more evolved and spontaneous musical perspective.

Good thing someone had the good sense to push the "record" button!

Because many of these performances transcend the initial attempts, mitigating the early flaws of early material like "Soma," the doom-laden "El Negro," and "Trilogia," while adding new dynamic depth and dimension to later triumphs like "Humo de Marihuana" and the colossal "El Cono del Encono."

Along with the marching instrumental "13," the dramatic "Traicion en el Arrocero," and the aptly renamed "Corsario Negro Loco" these effortlessly contrast fluttering flamenco-picking abstractions against gale-force hurricanes and Patagonia-shaking riff tectonics.

There's also a devastating rendition of Hawkwind's "Brainstorm" (merged with the relentless percussion of "You Shouldn't do That"), and I'll be damned if the Spanish translation to "Tormenta Mental" doesn't suit the song BETTER than the English original.

And for those of us lucky enough to secure a copy of this release before vinyl prices shot through the roof (I probably paid $15, and that was a lot in 2012!), the fourth side features a sprawling, spontaneous, nineteen-minute "Tomaiten (Jamm Aleman)" featuring Colour Haze vocalist and guitarist Stefan Koglek.

It was Koglek, through his involvement with Los Natas' European label, Elektrohasch, who arranged this one-day session at Munich's Araton Studios and gave stoner rock fans such a valuable document of this great but elusive band at the peak of their powers.

And I say that because Los Natas' ensuing studio albums, El Hombre Montaña (2006) and Nuevo Orden de la Libertad (2009), marked a creative regression to a less adventurous and, in my opinion, rather lackluster brand of blues rock, before the trio officially disbanded in 2012.
