Dreaming of summer with Crispijn van de Passe's Hortus floridus, a flower garden in a book. We had this volume out for a class on Friday and couldn't resist taking a few photos to share. Each page is a delicate, detailed engraving that shows plants, flowers, and pollinators up close.

01.14.23 We worked on making a recording of Alarm Will Sound performing the first movement of my Execution symphony in Columbia MO today. It's beautiful to hear this long-gestating piece come alive with such mastery. I am told that the world premiere on Jan 17 2023 will be streamed live on the University of Missouri School of Music YouTube channel. The show begins at 7pm CST / 8pm EST.
Missouri Secretary of State's Jay Ashcroft wants libraries to obtain parental permission before allowing children to check out materials.
If anyone has a second to tell our state politicians exactly what they can do with their book bans, I’m sure the young readers of Missouri would appreciate it.
(I live in one of the only sane counties in this backwoods relic of a state, which makes us a literal constant target of Eric Schmitt, et al and their archaic and harmful policies.)
The Magic Tree
Once darkness falls over the streets leading into the Village of Cherry Hill, the shopping center appears dark and quiet from the outside. As you drive closer, however, you begin to see the glowing concoction of thousands of Christmas lights illuminating the small grassy square that sits in the middle of the complex. People from all over the area come to see the cherry tree, every inch covered in a rainbow of colorful lights. This colorful spectacle has been a part of the Columbia Holiday tradition for over 15 years and doesn’t show signs of slowing down any time soon.
The man in charge goes by Will Treelighter. He continues his tedious work each year because he loves the joy and imagination the tree ignites in its visitors. Will hopes that each onlooker will get lost in the beauty and “magic” of the magnificent tree. So pile your friends and family into your vehicle and travel over to the Village of Cherry Hill to experience the incomparable Columbia, Missouri tradition.
The Magic Tree has been a crab apple tree in Columbia, Missouri lit by Will Treelighter every holiday season since 1995. Each year in the fall Will has set to work wrapping every branch with mini lights creating an ever more elaborate spectacle that generates increasing interest from surrounding communities. That interest has led to such an influx of admirers to the little neighborhood which has hosted the Magic Tree that Will found it necessary to seek a new home for his creation.
Starting with the 2010 holiday season you can now find the Magic Tree at its new host neighborhood, the Village of Cherry Hill, located in Columbia, MO at Scott Blvd. and Chapel Hill Roads. The new tree is, appropriately enough, a Cherry Tree.
The Magic Tree is lit every evening from 5pm to 11pm from Thanksgiving Eve to Epiphany (January 6th).
Purpose of the Magic Tree: First and foremost it is a “senseless act of beauty”. This idea, that there can be a senseless act of beauty is actually a misnomer for beauty all by itself has the supreme purpose of conveying the human/divine ideas of hope, goodness, peace and even love. Beauty has a way, when we recognize it, of paradoxically putting us at ease while at the same time exciting us. This paradox is known as the state of joy. This state of mind can have a powerfully healing affect on heart, mind and soul not to mention the body. Acts of beauty, then, are always quite sensible and have a resurrecting influence in our lives. https://magic-tree.org/

TINA THE TURKEY STRIKES AGAIN

I was going to compile some college town gothic experiences but it became a little too niche however i think these are worth sharing
• the cashier at the cinema box office smiles and greets you by your full name, you've never met them before in your life.
• "I hate coming to these things" says a man at the punk show, it's the same man who said that last week, and the week before
• "Got a light?" Someone asks, you reach in your pocket, by the time you find it the person is gone, they left one of their shoes
• A friend introduces you to their new roommate, it's the same roommate as before, do they keep forgetting you or are stuck in a time loop?
• A man in a crop top comes up to you in the coffee shop, he greets you by your full name - he's your friend's roommate. You are reintroduced to him yet again later that night.
• This is your 5th date with this person, why is this moving so slow? You've actually been going to the movies alone for two months
• The same person you see at every party is still talking about how he doesn't like the same movie, or is this the same party as before?
• You're walking to work and you pass your neighbor of three years, you consider saying hello, it's too late now, it's always too late
• You reach into your wallet to get out your pizza slice punch card, two come out, then a third, then a fourth, they're manifesting in your wallet. They all have a different amount of punches
