In Your Dreams
“Like that nightmare where you’re, like, holding a puppy and you keep dropping it” [x]
Phil has never been happier than he is right now. He was sure it had to be impossible for the smile to leave his face. He could practically feel his heart swelling with the love he was feeling at this moment.
He and Dan had just arrived home, Phil holding a Corgi puppy in his arms. The puppy yipped and looked up at the both of them.
And then it happened.
It seemed to happen in slow motion, yet fast enough for Phil to be helpless to the situation.
The puppy began slipping from his hands, falling to the floor, and Phil was powerless to stop it.
“Phil!” Dan exclaimed. “How could you, Phil?!” he shouted. “Phil! Phil!”
Phil shot up in bed, his heart racing, almost unable to catch his breath while tears stung the back of his eyes.
“Phil?” he heard and turned his wide eyes to Dan, who was sat beside him, a hand on his arm and his sleepy eyes apparent.
That’s when Phil realized he was in bed, in their dark bedroom, and it had all been a dream.
“Are you okay?” Dan then asked, clearly concerned.
Phil shook his head, trying to erase the remnants of the dream from his mind. “Just a bad dream.”
“It seemed more like a nightmare.” Dan said. “Do you want to talk about it?”
Phil wasn’t sure if he could utter the words, but he also knew if he could confide in anyone, it was Dan.
“Well, you were there.” Phil began. “And our puppy.”
“Our puppy?” Dan asked, a smile tugging at his lips. “I don’t see how this was a nightmare.”
Phil looked wide-eyed at Dan. “It gets worse.” he said. “We brought our puppy, a Corgi-”
“Of course.” Dan interrupted, fondly rolling his eyes.
“We brought him home and we were so happy, but then...” Phil trailed off.
“Then what?” Dan asked.
“I dropped him.” Phil said sadly.
Dan’s face softened. They joked a lot about Phil being clumsy, but he knew Phil truly did worry about his capability of being a pet owner, or a parent one day.
Dan didn’t say anything and simply wrapped his arms around Phil, letting Phil melt into the embrace. He pressed a kiss to Phil’s forehead before pulling back and looking him in the eyes.
“It was just a dream.” Dan assured him. “I promise nothing like that will happen when we get our real Corgi.”
Phil smiled a little before lying back down and Dan wrapped an arm around him.
“I can’t wait until we get Thor.” Phil said as he closed his eyes.
Dan cringed at the name. “Only in your dreams.” he said before going back to sleep.
