Marvel Age #13 (1984)

Here's a rare gem that will be of interest to comics scholars, historians and – of course – practitioners of the craft.  This issue, which was published in 1984, contains a behind-the-scenes look at the techniques of old school four color comics printing, including the all-important color chart showing all 64 combinations of red, yellow and blue at 0%, 25%, 50% and 100% levels that were used in all traditionally colored and printed old school comic books up through the early 1980s.

I haven’t read a modern superhero comic in at least 20 years. Probably more. So I can’t say anything about the writing (and those old stories I liked, and occasionally still read out of nostalgia, were not that great mostly). But. The one thing that makes it absolutely impossible for me to ever ever ever read one of today's comics, is the coloring. I just cannot deal with those computer colors. They are awful and absolutely misunderstand the whole point of graphic storytelling (yes, it’s a personal taste thing, and also more than that). Mostly might be a “realism” thing, wanting to “compete” with videogames. I dunno. But all I see are brownish gradient smudges. Nothing pops, nothing stands out. Hey, just like those same movies! Funny.

(Example here is not perfect, but for anybody (?) that does not know what I’m on about). (also, I am an adult, and these comics are not made for me, so it’s ok anyway. And I read and love other comics)

more coloring, two pages from Daredevil: Born Again. Really wanted to get that old newsprint look but with more freedom in the palette. I think it's my fave thing I've colored so far.

Four pages left to color in this graphic novel, and I’m DONE. I'm locking this down before 2019 hits-- maybe even Christmas, if the wind's at my back!

Any of y’all #colorists out there got any tips on how to do this stuff quickly and efficiently?

May the Fourth be with you, friends! Tbh the day kind of caught me by surprise (to me, everyday is Star Wars day haha) so I didn’t have anything prepared. So yeah. This is really late. orz

So I colored in some Star Wars newspaper strips! The first one is from Revenge of the Jedi and the second one is from Bounty Hunter on Ord Mantel.(actually I colored that first one in a while back, some of you probably remember, but did the second one today)

Anyway I used 37 colors for the first and 36 colors for the second one, picking colors only from this palette (which was introduced in 1987, the original strips are from 1981 so it would’ve still been using the “golden age” palette of 64 colors instead. Which actually I want to try coloring something with that one sometime)
