one of my mutuals is liveblogging Before Crisis...
In RP’s when characters ask him why he’s still a Turk.. why dosen’t he retire.. his answer is always ‘the only way a Turk retires..is in a body bag’ He also has this strong sense of loyalty to those he cares for. Why when forced with the option to kill veld and save the rest of the Turks.. or they would all die right there. he already had a plan hatched to save all of them. As to why he stays? Loyalty to Rufus and also what better place to be to protect the former Turks
yes. but that is. that is sad.
like...when most of your former comrades jumped ship already, and you’re sticking around largely to protect them, and yet your explanation of why you haven’t left is ‘this gig is an until-death deal,‘ then you have either suffered a genuine break with reality, or...you have cast yourself as the person responsible for doing. all of the suffering. on a permanent basis.
why, tseng. why’s it gotta be you?
and like. rufus did come through for them eventually, but the only way you can really consider him to have thereby done better than breaking even on the ‘using them as disposable pawns’ first impression is if you honestly believe he has more inherent value than they do. that he has a natural right to exploit them. so that when he treats them like people at all, this is him actively granting a favor, magnanimity rather than common decency.
that’s the only way you can say tseng owes rufus anything. so loyalty to rufus is also sort of...symptomatic of the problem.
the only way i can make all of tseng’s choices and non-choices and emotional signalling make sense together is if his decisionmaking tree skews irrationally in favor of causing himself suffering. whether he’s trying to decide what would be right or what would be pragmatic, ‘protect tseng’ is the opposite of selected for.
dude has better self-sabotage game than vincent.
tseng is loyal to a system that has never done anything but hurt him, that doesn’t even exist anymore. and yet here he is. i mean, i am more or less with you on this, i think the main reasons he’s still a Turk by AC are:
1) conditions have improved
2) if he left he’d have to reinvent himself entirely, and that is a painful and terrifying thing to do at the best of times, and
3) the other three Turks and Rufus are the only people he has left and, like you say, being loyal to his people is the core of his non-Shinra-issue personality.
and that is really messed up, ok, that is a very quiet tragedy on main, i don’t care if you’re evil secret police man, can i give hug. is okay be person.
if Tseng wasn’t raised within Shinra like Cissnei, his family has to have been so abusive, idk how else you can wind up with such a warped sense of self-worth and mangled grasp of personal agency.
