someone commented on my recent Giovanni/Domino fic that they don’t ship it themself because Giovanni seems toxic to them, and, well... yeah. Exactly. I’m not sure he’s capable of going all soft for someone and genuinely caring for them in ways that are mutually beneficial. i mean look how his son turned out

Domino doesn’t think he’s capable of that either, but that’s fine. She knows what she signed up for. (To an extent - but getting in over her head and staying there feels normal after a while. It doesn’t feel like drowning as long as Giovanni lets her breathe.)

Giovanni finds himself fascinated by Domino, by how easily she slips in and out of the roles she plays - innocent girl, merciless elite agent, and, when she lets her guard down around him, a curious combination of both. She might just be an interesting plaything, but he takes proper care of his things, at least as long as they remain useful. And his Domino is very, very useful.

It’s pride, mostly, that keeps Domino around. Out of all the women in Team Rocket, the boss chose her, and that’s an honor she doesn’t take lightly, even as she sometimes questions what she’s done to earn it. She flaunts it, a little, doesn’t bother to hide that she and the boss are - is it dating? She certainly doesn’t dispute the rumors that they’re intimate. It’s useful, being the boss’s favorite. Like Giovanni, she makes use of all the tools at her disposal.

She’s not open to discussing what it means that she sleeps in his bed more often than not, and certainly more often than they actually have sex. On some level, she really doesn’t want to know. It’s... nice, to have that simple human contact. She doesn’t want it to get complicated.

For Giovanni, it’s not terribly complicated. He knows even he isn’t above wanting those basic comforts, and sees no harm in indulging them with someone who wants what he’s offering too much to take advantage of him. A warm body in his bed, and a well-honed weapon in his hand, and the endless fascination of watching Domino shift between those two things. He doesn’t love her. He’s definitely taking advantage of her. He is, as the comment that prompted this said, a toxic person to be in a relationship with.
