Idea: Together Forever - Shroud's Happiest Day

Ortho: 'In life and death, sickness or health, forever by your side... Will you accept me?' - Another day in NRC happens, till Ortho is found out of his usual excitement. When questioned about it, his answer brings shock: he asked for someone's hand?! His brother's?! What?!

Everyone knows the wrong implications this mere concept brings and panics over whatever Idia might've taught his little brother with the stuff he watches; however, Vil and Lilia calm everyone down, to let Ortho explain himself.

The humanoid explains that he recently came into contact with his parents' wedding pictures, and inquired about that; his mother was more than happy to share about their 'happiest day', or at least, among the top happiest. Mr. Shroud is a bit embarassed about having to explain something like that; after all, Ortho could just research about weddings and ceremonies.

The boy's mind is set when he sees a pamphlet offering small ceremonies' discounts, but the mere subject bringing brings out the worst reaction from Idia: he lashes out at Ortho, demanding that he leaves him alone and not bring up this trash anymore; he then admits somehow forgetting about the Phantom Bride incident, and feeling embarassed and upset about ticking him off for not remembering such a matter. He then explains why he even 'proposed': he wishes to celebrate their close relationship as family, and their commitment to one another.

Vil then understands, chuckling at the boy's innocence; he promptly explains the misunderstanding, that Ortho isn't much looking to get married, but to have a commitment ceremony. Basically, it can be held as a traditional wedding or a private reunion for paper signing, but beyond couples, it can also applies to family commitments, such as a mother and their children. Sebek immediately links this description to Lilia and Silver's adoption paper signature moment, or even when they verbally agreed on Silver having his father's last name (spoilers? though everyone must already know), and Vil confirms it.

With this cleared up, Lilia is more than happy to help Ortho, and so are the others, who become determined to convince Idia to change his mind. Ortho however is hesitant about contacting him again, although he has done it before whenever his brother was in a bad mood; he doesnt want to force Idia or anything. They consider subliminally messaging him (Jade's suggestion), to warm him up on the concept, until Cater finds a certain article.

Idia is shaken, ignoring any calls, from dorm and family. He obviously feels guilty about lashing at Ortho, but after what he saw, he couldn't hold himself back. As he logs in to play and calm down, he witness an event happening, but feels like ignoring it for being wedding-themed. However, MuscleRed (Lilia) convinces him to go with him for a raid anyway; when Ortho's brought up, Idia admits how ashamed he is for what he did, and explains his side: sure, he does remember the Phantom Bride shebang and how he almost died, but... that wasn't the reason. He even kept the suit, for the aesthetic overall, and 'it was kind of too pretty to just discard'. The actual reason he was ticked off? His favorite member of Premo just announced her engagement to an athlete, alongside her retirement from the group.

And it's Lilia's turn to be angry at Idia for his brashness, for such a 'trivial thing'; even if Idia wanted to argue back, he just agrees and mutters about how he's a jerk, as if he didn't felt bad enough. When his scolding's over, Lilia pretty much demands that he takes responsibility for this mess. In Ortho's case, Cater told him about Premo's article, and this makes Ortho feel even more guilty, because of Idia's uber-fan status and passion for the idol group. Vil however shakes that off, arguing it gives Idia even less right to disregard 'his most honest feelings'.

Ortho manages to assemble a 'wedding gear', following Vil and Crewel's tips (Vil being honoured to be his man of honor (pun intended?)), as well as being inspired by eveyone else's suits. Lilia organizes the whole party ceremony, aided by Ignihyde and Diasomnia's students. Idia does take responsibility and apologizes, but with all that assembly, his anxiety triggers are all pressed at once: a fancy-schmancy party full of people was chosen, and he'd have to stand in front of everyone?!

The big day arrives: Ortho reveals his wedding gear, his parents escort him across the room, Lilia's already crying, Silver and Malleus commenting on the whole 'children are meant to cry thing'... but where is the older brother? Sebek offers himself to drag him off his room to honour his compromise, Lilia siding with him for once, but then-

Idia: 'HOLD IT!'

Idia has arrived, wearing the very tux, panting hard as he ran all the way there. He apologizes for the delay, having finished the raid Lilia dragged him to overnight, since he was practically 'done over there' once his scolding was finished. Lilia and Vil however are still not pleased; they ask Ortho and the others for a short moment to make him look 'proper' for this event.

Now the event happens: in the absence of Crowley (convenience or not?), Cater is selected as the officiant (Lilia did ask why not him, but Ortho explained that he took an equally big role on the celebration with the party arrangements, and convincing his brother, so he accepts it). Idia also reveals the other reason he took so long to arrive: even if not a wedding, he bought a 'ring' for this ceremony. Specifically, a pair of arm rings with personalized attachments, and he might've taken a while to perfect Ortho's to not damage his wedding gear.

When time arrives for the vows, Idia removes Ortho's mask, wanting to 'fully see him' for this; everyone else had their theories over why Ortho covers his face, and even ponder if it's related to Idia's trauma or of the humanoid experiences some form of bug or glitch of not done so, but Ortho and his parents admit it's for aesthetic. He is a Shroud, after all.

Forehead kisses are given, and cheers and wailing (specially from Lilia, Sebek and Vil) are echoed over the place. During the celebration afterparty, Ortho is thankful for everyone helping him make such a thoughtful memory. Idia... is under the food table, recovering his introvert battery with a quick gacha game. Ortho prevents the others from pulling him out of there, saying he had enough emotion for one day and did appear after all.

Idia: 'Even if I never get married in the future... I'm more than happy to stay by your side forever, Ortho.' Ortho: 'Nii-san, I love you very much. Let's keep looking out for each other.'

Extra scene (card vignette?): Ortho asks Idia to sleep by his side like they did sometimes when younger; by sheer coincidence, the overnight exertion from yesterday caught up to Idia, and it's not like he would deny his little brother's pretty please request. Their parents find them asleep together and cover them.

The Great Handfasting Project: Secular Wedding Planning Books

While historical sources about pre-Christian weddings and books written by modern pagans can give you a lot of good ideas for your ceremony, many of them don't cover the most stressful part of getting married: planning, budgeting, scheduling, and managing a modern wedding.

My fiance and I decided in December to move our wedding date up from August of 2024 to August of 2023 -- cutting our planning time from nineteen months to just over seven months. This meant we had a lot less time than intended to make a guest list, make a budget, book a venue, send out invitations, buy our outfits, arrange catering for the reception, and all the other things you have to do to make a wedding happen. It also meant that our timeline was a little more rushed than we'd originally intended.

Because our timeline had suddenly shrunk, we decided to prioritize planning the reception first, then start writing a script for our ceremony after we'd nailed down reception details. We did this because we knew our reception was going to have more than three times as many guests as our ceremony and would be what we spent most of our budget on. Our reception is also going to be 100% secular out of consideration for guests who may not be comfortable attending a pagan ceremony but who still want to support us.

I cope with new and stressful situations by reading about them. Research is the balm that soothes my worries and the foundation that lets me build my own kickass plans. When we decided to move up our wedding date, I immediately went out and bought a couple of books to help me navigate the many big and small decisions I'd have to make in the coming months.

The Everything Guide to Micro Weddings by Katie Martin

When I first started looking into planning my own wedding, I quickly learned that what my fiance and I wanted to do is called a "micro wedding." According to Katie Martin, a micro wedding is any wedding or commitment ceremony with fewer than 50 guests. I feel like most pagan weddings end up falling into this category. (Something about pagans makes us prefer small, intimate gatherings, I guess?)

Pros

Katie Martin is actually a professional wedding planner, so this book very much comes across as expert advice from an industry professional.

There's lots of good, practical advice about logistics, which is exactly what I wanted. This book taught me how to make a wedding planning spreadsheet, and I love that.

I like that the author includes advice for dealing with family members' expectations for your wedding day, especially when they would have liked to see you do things differently. I think a lot of this advice is relevant to pagans whose family doesn't understand why they want a handfasting, or anyone else who has to gently break it to their grandmother that they aren't having a church wedding. I felt like these sections did help prepare me to defend our decision to do a small, casual wedding and my decision not to have my biological father present even though several of my siblings are still close to him.

This book is LGBTQ+ inclusive!

I also love that the author gives practical advice for interfaith and multicultural weddings, including alternatives for when one or both religions doesn't allow interfaith ceremonies.

I like that the author addresses guest dietary needs in the sections on planning the menu. For example, she recommends asking guests about food allergies before finalizing the menu, making sure to have vegan/vegetarian options, and offering non-alcoholic drinks for toasts. As a vegetarian with Celiac Disease, I appreciate this and can testify that it's unfortunately not something every wedding planner thinks about.

This book was written after the pandemic and includes tips and ideas for celebrating during quarantine, which is really helpful.

The appendix has literal checklists you can use to plan different parts of your wedding.

Cons

Katie Martin is a professional wedding planner who specializes in destination weddings, and it shows. She discusses destination weddings a lot in this book. Maybe it's just because I'm not planning a destination wedding, but I felt like that topic could have been its own book instead of being lumped into this one.

The "environmentalist" politics of this book are inconsistent. At one point, Martin says that one of the main draws of micro weddings is that they have a smaller carbon footprint than bigger weddings, which I'm sure is true. But just a few chapters later, she gives a list of potential locations for destination weddings that includes Hawaii and other places where both the environment and Native people are seriously harmed by tourism. This is a very minor gripe, but it annoyed me and felt a little bit like greenwashing.

I wish Martin gave price estimates for the things she suggests. I understand that she probably didn't want to date her book by including exact numbers, but a rough estimate would have been helpful. There are almost no numbers given, and when the author says that Option X is cheaper than Option Y, she doesn't say how much cheaper it is. This makes it hard to think about budgeting while reading.

It really rubbed me the wrong way that this author subscribes to the outdated etiquette of referring to married women as "Mrs. [husband's name]" in invitations and programs. Martin even says divorced women should be addressed as "Mrs. [ex-husband's name]" if they haven't remarried! This is based on the incredibly patriarchal idea that women's identities are defined by their husbands, and if I received a wedding invite that addressed me this way, I wouldn't go. There are also no alternatives given for addressing same-gender couples. This just feels like an incredibly old-fashioned and misogynist inclusion in a book that is otherwise very modern.

Overall rating: 4/5 stars

Would I recommend it? Yes, especially if you're doing most of the planning for your wedding yourself.

Offbeat Bride by Ariel Meadow Stallings

When my fiance and I first decided to (literally) tie the knot, Offbeat Wed (formerly Offbeat Bride) was an incredibly helpful source of inspiration. It was the first time I'd ever seen photos of polyamorous weddings, which I immediately sent to all of my partners with lots of hearts and crying emojis. It's also a goldmine of inspiration for queer weddings, nonbinary/genderqueer weddings, disabled weddings, and so much more. So when I learned that the site's founder had written a wedding planning book, I knew it would be an invaluable resource.

(Note: This book has been revised twice since it was originally published. The version I read is the third edition, which is the most recent version.)

Pros

This book addresses things I've never seen talked about in other wedding planning resources, like the conflict of hating the beauty industrial complex for making money off insecurities they created vs. wanting to look nice for your wedding photos. (Because even if you don't hire a photographer, someone is gonna take photos.) I loved this book's "do what you gotta do" approach and the emphasis on feeling comfortable and beautiful on your special day.

I cannot stress enough how much I appreciate the section titled "A Big-Bride Survival Guide." As a fat girl, lemme tell you: as stressful as shopping for wedding outfits already is, it's more stressful with a bigger body. And don't even get me started on the subtle (and not-so-subtle) weight loss comments from relatives. I loved that this book includes practical advice for how to navigate the entire process as a fat bride (or groom, or spouse).

This is by far the most LGBTQ+ affirming wedding planning book I've read so far. There's an entire chapter dedicated to queer weddings, but advice for queering your wedding is sprinkled throughout the rest of the book as well. "Queer wedding" also isn't only defined as two men or two women getting married. There's advice for bisexual and pansexual weddings (and the author identifies as bisexual!), asexual weddings, transgender weddings, and nonbinary/genderqueer weddings. There's even a short but sweet section on polyamorous commitment ceremonies, both for groups of more than two people who are "getting weddinged" and for polyamorous couples who may not be out to all their guests but still want to find subtle ways to include their other partners. I also really liked that the author acknowledges the struggles and hardships faced by queer couples (and throuples and more) and the importance of celebrating queer community, resilience, and chosen-family.

I really appreciate the warning about the pitfalls of wedding planning apps, magazines, and social media. The author warns readers about the risk of having so much inspiration you fall into the hole of choice paralysis or keep redoing things you already finished. She also warns about the temptation to compare your wedding to someone else's. I loved this gentle reminder to be mindful in how we engage with the wedding planning industry. Here's a wonderful direct quote: "Remember, the wedding tech is here to serve you. You are not here to serve it."

There's an entire chapter on disabilities and accessibility! I really appreciated this inclusion, and I found the advice genuinely helpful as I plan a wedding that accommodates my own chronic illnesses, my fiance's and my ADHD, several guests with mobility issues, and other guests with various other health conditions and invisible disabilities.

I loved the chapter on self-care and navigating wedding planning anxiety. Planning any big event, but especially one as legally, ideologically, and culturally loaded as a wedding, is really stressful, even if you're doing a small celebration with just close friends and family. I appreciated the acknowledgement that feeling stressed or anxious is both normal and common, and I loved that the author talked about the ways this stress can affect your physical body as well.

Overall, this is a really great book with excellent advice, and it really does cover every single aspect of wedding planning.

Cons

It's actually really hard for me to think of stuff I dislike about this book, if I'm being honest. There were a few typos, but nothing atrocious.

This book is written from the bride's perspective. The author includes lots of stories about her own wedding, and she is a woman who married a man, which definitely shaped her experience. Like I mentioned, there's a lot of good advice here for grooms and other-gendered people having weddings, and there's a lot of advice and suggestions for queer weddings. But if it's important to you to read a book about someone's firsthand experience of having a same-gender wedding, or of being a transgender bride/groom, or of navigating the wedding industry when you don't identify with a binary gender, this book isn't that.

Overall rating: 5/5 stars

Would I recommend it? Yes!!! Especially if you're having a "nontraditional" wedding.

People are utilizing commitment ceremonies to symbolically, though not legally, bind them to multiple partners.

Not my personal choice, but I'm glad to see polyamory being discussed.

Committing to Too Late

The view was spectacular. The water was crystal clear and bright turquoise; the sky stretching out into the distance with wisps of clouds against the blue. Humid heat whirled around us as we walked up the trail along the seaside. Nick, Matt, and I had been in Oahu for almost a week. It was a different honeymoon than the one I’d expected, but it was better than I could have ever wanted. Nick slipped his hand into mine as we meandered up Makapuu Point toward the lighthouse that sat on the edge of the sea.

           Matt grinned as he watched us. He walked backward with his hands stuck in the pockets of his shorts. Sunglasses hid his warm brown eyes, but I could see the soft curve of his cheeks as he smiled. Days in the sun had darkened his already tan skin. My husband looked happy, and it made my heart soar in my chest.

           I looked from Matt to Nick, feeling as if the whole world belonged to me. Nick wore a pair of mirrored aviators over his bright blue eyes and an LA Clippers hat that shaded his face. His fine brown hair was pulled back into a looped ponytail at the nape of his neck. Like his brother, the sun had bronzed his skin. I leaned against his shoulder and smiled.

           “What are we doing out here?” I asked.

           The brothers looked at one another in that way they had. In and out of the ring, they could practically read each other’s thoughts. It made them nearly unstoppable in a match. I’d seen the fruits of that gift on our wedding night.

           Matt stopped and looked up at the sky. “We’ve got a little surprise for you, Y/N,” he said with a mischievous smile.

           I glanced between him and Nick. “What did you two do?”

           Nick’s lips ghosted against my hair. Matt threaded his fingers with mine, and the three of us followed the trail along rocky coasts. Neither one of them spoke, but I could feel their eyes on me and smell the scent of their cologne. There was something beautifully peaceful about walking beneath the crystalline sky in paradise with the men I loved more than anything in the world.

           “I wish we could give you something more than this,” Matt said as we rounded a bend in the trail. The lighthouse stood just a few hundred feet ahead on an outcropping. Made of white stone and red-painted steel, it was small and quaint. It was perfect.

           “There’s nothing more I could want,” I whispered softly as we stood near the edge of the rock. White steel posts and chains were all that kept us from stepping closer to the ocean. They slipped their arms around me, sandwiching me between them. Nick kissed the side of my head.

           Matt slipped around to stand in front of me. He pushed his sunglasses up on top of his head and looked down at me with those brown eyes that I’d fallen so in love with. “It’s our last day here. Tomorrow we have to go back to the real world. And we want you to know that we’re serious about this life, Y/N. We’re willing to do whatever it takes to make this work.”

           My vision blurred with tears. I brushed my fingertips along his jaw and smiled softly. “I know, Matt. I know that.”

           He took my hand in his, brushing his fingers against my wedding band and engagement ring. For a moment, he just looked at me. Then he leaned in and kissed me softly, his free hand cupping my cheek. I sighed into his touch and grinned sheepishly as we broke apart.

           “Y/N,” Nick said. I turned toward the sound of his voice and found him down on one knee with a black velvet box in his hand.

           The tears that settled on my lashes burned as they slipped down my cheeks. “Nick,” I whispered behind my fingers. Matt slid his arms around my waist and rested his chin on my shoulder. His presence grounded me in a moment I never thought I’d have.

           Nick tucked his sunglasses over the brim of his hat. His blue eyes were glassy and bright. He smiled softly as he opened the box with shaking fingers. Inside was a simple yellow band that matched the one Matt had given me a week ago.

           “I wish I could give you more than this,” Nick said sweetly. His voice was rough with emotion. “If I could, I’d give you a wedding. I’d give you anything and everything that I could, but this is all I can do. And I hope that it’s enough.”

           “Oh, Nick,” I whispered. “It’s more than enough. You’ve always been enough.”

           He got to his feet and closed the space between us. He took my hand and carefully slipped the ring on my finger, sandwiching my engagement ring between the two wedding bands. “My heart has been yours since the day I saw you.” He swiped at the tears beneath his eyes. “It will always be yours. I promise to spend every day of my life with you and for you. If you will have me, I’ll be yours forever.”

           “Nick, I don’t want to go through life without you. And I’ve loved you since the moment you smiled at me.” I felt tears slip down my cheeks. “I wish I had something for you.”

           At that moment, Matt pressed something into my hand. When I looked down, I saw a plain ring that looked just like the one Matt wore. I smiled softly and held the pale yellow gold between my finger and thumb.

           “Nick Jackson, I love you with my whole heart. And I am so lucky that you choose to love me, too. I want nothing more in life than to live with you, to share my life—the good and the bad—with you. I promise to love you, to celebrate with you, to cry with you, to be your friend and your support. If you will have me, I’ll be yours forever.”

           I took his hand and slid the ring onto his finger. Then I pulled his hand to my mouth and kissed his ring finger. He did the same, and we stood on the edge of paradise with our hands clasped together. Matt stood behind me, his hand settled on the base of my spine.

           “You are my wife,” Nick murmured against my skin.

           Heat licked along my skin. It warmed me from the inside out. “You are my husband,” I replied.

           Matts hand disappeared as Nick pulled me into his arms. He brushed his fingertips against my cheek before he cupped my chin and tipped my mouth up to his. He kissed me gently, his hand sliding along my neck and cradling the back of my skull. I pressed my hands against his chest, let my fingers curl in the fabric of his shirt.

           When we parted, there was a grin on his face that made me feel like the whole world had gone bright and light. He kissed me again, a quick peck on the lips, his grin getting bigger with every passing moment. It was that moment in the hallway at the wedding, but more breathtaking and perfect.

           We walked back down the trail together, the two of them staying close enough to brush my hands or arms as we walked. Nick smiled whenever I looked at him. Matt grinned bigger each time our eyes met.

           The sun was just setting as we made it back to our hotel. I sat on the bed while the boys showered and ordered room service, staring at the stack of rings on my finger. When the two of them were finally settled on either side of me, smelling warm and sharply-sweet, I grinned and asked, “So when, exactly, are we going to be celebrating our anniversary?”

           Nick leaned his cheek against my hair. “Your wedding day.”

           Matt squeezed my fingers. “Split the difference?”

I smiled softly and looked between the two of them. “How about two?”

This couple held a commitment ceremony in 1957. The roll of film recording the event was taken to a local drug store for developing. The store owner decided the photos were inappropriate and didn’t release the print to the owners.

The photos were found sixty years later and attempts have been made to locate the couple.

This story is sad because the couple was denied seeing such personal and romantic photos. But it’s hopeful too by the fact that although gay people were persecuted in that era, the men were brave enough to challenge the system and make a commitment to each other.

Hopefully they were together a long time and were able to see the strides made for Gay Rights.
