In regards to your podcast: I avoided my emotions for about 10 or 11 years. I started trying almost 6 years ago and it's like a dam broke. I always assumed that I suck at dealing with my emotions because I never learned to cope. Then I learned about emotional dysregulation and 🤯. Do you have any insight on meditation as a tool for this? It's been suggested to me, I just keep forgetting.
Same same same.. I only started letting myself feel just over a year ago.
Emotions felt so weird at the start.. I told my counselor and he told me that it would be easier with practice.
Meditation helps.. if you do it right. I use mindfulness, which essentially serves the same role. It ground me to the now and allows me to just let myself feel. Not run or hide, just feel regardless of how bad it makes me feel.
I like using the metaphor of emotions as a river, and emotional dysregulation is not knowing how to swim. Most would just go with the flow and suffer from the currents, but learning mindfulness is to learn how to float and then to swim.
When people with emotional dysregulation feel bad they tend to go ARGH BAD and shut off.. cause its not as easy for us and we don’t know how to deal.
You essentially want to get past that but halting the urge to run and hide and let yourself FEEL.
