Evaluation
First of all I found this module very challenging, working to multiple deadlines really required a lot of organisation. Also with the dissertation running alongside it, I found it very difficult to multitask between, the academic and creative side of my mind. Therefore when it came to completing these two different projects, I found that I was either focusing on one or the other for long periods of time. I feel that this effected this module ‘Negotiated study’ the most, and reflects this on my work.
However despite this, I believe that my work has still been successful. Working alongside both a musician and a photographer, really gave great depth to my outcomes. Not only has collaborating with others who specialise in different areas helped my project, but I also found it has helped me as a designer. I have learnt many more new techniques and that out of all of this, communication of ideas is key to success. I had to discuss what kind of photos I required from the photographer, which was surprisingly more difficult than I first thought; I ended up sketching out thumbnail drawings of Dorothy so that she would understand my vision. This techniques worked quite well.
For my work with singer/songwriter Dorothy-Ella, I decided to split it into two briefs as it required me to explore film and animation which I have not really used before. In hindsight, when planning my time for this project, I should have allowed longer time to edit the stuff that I had filmed; I underestimated how long animation took. Therefore if I were to do something like this next time, I would research the techniques I am going to use in advance to avoid any timing issues. The album artwork I created for Dorothy, has opened up opportunities for me to work with other musicians within the Manchester. Tutors and students of Bimm Manchester have said that they would be interested in seeing some of my other work and potentially working with me in the future. This has lead me to starting up my portfolio again as I have found you never know when an opportunity will arise.
From this mode I have definitely learnt that backing up your work is essential. In the future I will triple back up all my work, as I did end up losing all my outcomes a couple of days before deadline. This was a massive learning curve for me and I will not be making that mistake again.
Overall, I am happy with how this module has gone, not particularly because of my outcomes, but because of the learning curve. This module has also helped me distinguish what I want to do after uni and where I want to go with my work.
[Got my hand on a couple of smoke grenades and thought that the effect it created would work look great for our campaign]
An idea for our campaign was to create multiple flash mobs across different locations; this will involve a dance group who will re-enact emotions which people hashtag as part of our campaign. They will bring in elements of ballet whilst also adding a contemporary feel. It will also be made apparent that the performances have taken inspiration from peoples hashtag’s. These sketches attempt to represent that idea.
This is an example of a location where a flash mob could occur...
[explain idea]
These were sketches I created for my previous idea, however feel that they could be used as inspiration when designing posters for our charity campaign.
