I asked you this once, but you never answered. And after reading your Arya answer - I decided to ask again, hope you don't mind. In a canon world, where they live a normal, peaceful life in Winterfell, how do you think Catelyn would react to a Ned Dayne proposal to Arya (or even Sansa)? Do you think his last name (and connection to Jon's possible mother) would have any impact on Catelyn and on her choice to accept it or not?

Oh, I’m sorry! Sometimes messages that I can’t just dash off a quick response to get buried in my inbox, and I kind of lose them. I do try to answer everybody, honest!

Anyway, I think that in a world where she and Ned remained alive and in peace at Winterfell long enough to manage marriage proposals for Arya or their other children (that didn’t involve crossing bridges held by old trolls, LOL!), if Ned continued to keep entirely silent on the subject of Jon’s mother, any proposals from Starfall would be met with a certain amount of trepidation on her part because Ashara Dayne was not only the only named candidate for Jon’s mother; she was a legendary beauty who had lept to her death under mysterious circumstances, possibly grief for her lost love. If Ned agreed to any match between Starfall and Winterfell, she would have to worry that he might be seeking some tangible connection between himself and the love he never got over. And that would hurt. A lot. After all the years they’d shared love and life in Winterfell, thinking he now was putting that love ahead of her once more would be incredibly painful. 

She’s a very pragmatic woman, however, and she wouldn’t dismiss a match out of hand without considering all the pros and cons. I honestly think she’d have a harder time with Allyria Dayne being matched to one of her boys than Edric Dayne being matched to one of her girls. Allyria would come to the North. If she was betrothed to Robb, for instance, she would one day become the Lady of Winterfell. Ashara Dayne’s sister (Ned’s lover’s sister?) would one day take Catelyn’s title and sit in her place. Ashara’s nephew would be the future Lord of Winterfell. That would be a very bitter pill for Catelyn to swallow, and I almost think Ned would be forced to speak the truth about Jon or at the very least swear to her that Ashara Dayne had not been his mother to get Catelyn to accept such a situation without being extremely hurt and angry all over again.

On the other hand, a match between Edric Dayne and Arya (or Sansa) would make Catelyn’s daughter the Lady of Starfall. Ashara was a Lady of House Dayne, but she had never been the Lady of Starfall, only the younger sister of its Lord. Catelyn’s daughter would actually rise to a higher station than Ashara had held in her own home. And Catelyn’s grandsons would one day be Lords of Starfall AND Winterfell while Jon Snow (theoretically the son Ashara bore Catelyn’s husband) and any sons he might have would be Lords of neither.

Now, Catelyn is not a vindictive woman, but she does believe in justice, and I can see her believing that her descendants ruling in Starfall was a kind of justice for the wrong Ashara Dayne (theoretically) had done to her. I don’t for one minute think she’d send either of her daughters there to be wed specifically for that reason, but if a marriage for one of them to Ned Dayne seemed favorable for other reasons, that little fact might help her more easily get over one of her girls becoming a Dayne. 

Honestly, I think her bigger problem would simply be the distance--Starfall is a hell of a long way from Winterfell, and sending the girls to King’s Landing caused her to feel she had to “let go of them in her heart.” Marrying one of her daughters off to Dorne would essentially mean accepting that she’d likely see her child only a very few times again in her life--if she was lucky. And that would be hard. But if she felt the marriage was truly advantageous to her child’s future, she would make that sacrifice because that’s what she was raised to believe was her duty. If she did have a specific concern about sending her daughter to House Dayne, it would more likely be worries about her daughter’s treatment there rather than her own hurts. After all, she wouldn’t be there to see or hear any insult or resentment. But if Ashara Dayne truly did commit suicide over the loss of Ned and their child, how would the daughter of Ned and Catelyn be received there? Would she be resented or treated without the respect she was due? Catelyn absolutely would not want that for her child, and I can see her worrying about the possibility.

So, in the end, I think Catelyn would prefer the best and highest marriage she could make for each of her daughters. She would definitely want them wed only to the Lord or Heir of a significant House. A High Lord would be best, of course, but there are only so many of those, and Sansa, being the eldest would get first shot at any reasonably aged High Lord marriage prospect. (Knowing her sister’s miserably unhappy existence, I doubt Catelyn would condone wedding either of the girls to an aged man. She does care about her daughters’ happiness even when her idea of what will make them happy doesn’t match theirs (particularly Arya’s). So, while Starfall isn’t the ruling House of Dorne, it is a very noble House with a storied history and would be an excellent match, especially for a younger daughter. And it would create a marriage alliance between the North and Dorne which I don’t think has ever existed. That’s no small accomplishment. 

So, yeah, given all that, I think she’d do whatever she could to reassure herself about her worries and give her blessing to the marriage. Once Arya was gone away to Starfall for good, Ned might have to endure some stony silences and cold nights, but if he won’t open his mouth and just talk to her, he’s got no one to blame for that but himself. Hopefully, if Arya is old enough to be married, Jon is gone somewhere, too. I’d rather it not be the Wall, but he could be off squiring somewhere or even having been given his own Keep. As we learned in canon when Ned was taking over half her children to King’s Landing, the idea of sending her own babes away and keeping Jon Snow forever at Winterfell doesn’t sit easily with her. Jon would be considered a grown man at this point, and both he and Cat would be much happier if he were establishing his own life in some way out from under her nose. Whatever the situation with Ned’s honesty or lack thereof or Jon’s presence or absence, she wouldn’t stay silent or angry or sullen about Arya’s departure forever. She has other children to care for. And as for Ned, she loves him. She chose to love him however she felt about Jon’s presence and Ned’s silence all those years ago, and she’ll make that same choice in the wake of sending her own child to Dorne.

And that’s about all I can think of on Dornish marriages--specifically DAYNE marriages for the children of Catelyn Stark. :-)

Okay this isn't very TMI but could you explain your clan's slavery thing? I know it's a thing, but I don't really grok the full concept and/or details of it.

The second in command, Crithagra, was a slave who was then freed, and we have Solus who’s going to be officially freed when Rook’s plot is over :D (Rook will go Fuck Everything and free her because he’s technically her master.)

Under Tarn, a slave’s lot was generally Very Bad and Very Brutal (case in point: See Flamewar)

Under Fulcrum, they are still slaves but they aren’t abused, for the most part. 

It’s up to each slave to make it of what they will„ so it is a very complicated matter. Some, like Noodle, are utterly clueless they really are slaves. Some, like Ramen, know and are…sort of OK with it because they have/had a high rank in the clan. (It came with it’s own dangers, but that’s another issue, maybe). Some, like Flamewar, would sooner kill the clan than remain a slave. Some, like Prima, would leave the clan as soon as they where freed.
