The compost heaps of Great Dixter, East Sussex, UK, had a plentiful crop of gourd cultivars (Cucurbita pepo) and winter squashes including the orange coloured Cucurbita maxima ‘Turk’s Turban’. The latter has been grown as a cultivar since at least 1820. As a keen keeper of several compost heaps I left the garden with compost heap envy!

Cucurbita (squashes) are best grown on a sunny site, with fertile soil that has plenty of organic matter. It is important to give the plants enough room, as most will produce trailing stems so the magnificent compost heaps at Great Dixter, Sussex, provide the ideal site. I always admire these compost heaps when I visit the garden and in the autumn they are already being productive!

In a big family there seems to be a lot of waste if you let it happen - this is my vegetable stock I ve made from all the veg scraps - turnip tops - carrot ends - onions ends - peelings - garlic ends - ( no cauliflower - broccoli or Brussels sprouts it makes the stock seriously bitter!! 😬😬) I freeze the peelings as I got and when I have a nice freezer bag full I pop it all in a big Pan and make sure it's completely covered in water - bring to the boil and I simmer for 2-3 hrs. It's totally up to you - but i think 30 mins at min. Sieve all the peeling out - which are now going on my compost! I now have a lovely tasty stock to throw lots of chunky veggies in!!
