My first Maya walk cycle for uni! Animating is hard :'(
Hello! I hope this doesn't come out as weird, but I'm looking to apply to Bournemouth University for Computer Animation, and I saw that you got in (congrats!!), I was wondering if you have any tips on the portfolio for the program and what to put in it?
Hi there! No this isn't weird at all, its taking the initiative c: First of all thank you very much I'm currently still in fresher's and yet to have taken any classes in the course. But the timetable looks so fantastic (despite the 8 hours of lectures on Monday) I'll be able to tell you more about the course if your interested throughout the year.
First thing I'd say is that they do give you guidelines like a week or so before, each uni did.
Portfolio wise I can only really tell you what I had, I did a level art and my final grade was a* so I had a good sized portfolio of traditional art (pencil, charcoal, life drawing and oil), mostly focusing of figures as that's my strongest suit (along with colour use). I know some on my course did an art foundation before this course.
Secondly next to my traditional stuff I had my 2D digital art (if you wanna know roughly what it looked like see this blog along with my dA (hatterina) march 2013 and earlier I think. Basically I had no 3d work, animation or not, I did have two pencil animation loops done with a lightbox and image ready.
They like to see original work and like characters etc. I did have about half my digital work I printed out in a booklet as fanart as some of it was my best work. But they prefer original ideas. I had a few sheets on my characters and if you want I can email you my portfolio and you can see what I did.
Another thing that differs with BU compared to other course is a) its grade boundaries (about 40 points higher than anywhere else) and b) the three tests you take on your interview day. The tests are important and I swear them and my portfolio are the only reason I still got in despite being twenty points short. If your doing a level maths the maths is totally fine, I managed 82% when they're looking for at least 60%. The logic test is basically professor Layton games (honestly if your worried about them just play the Layton series they're exactly that kind of route.) I got 86% and again their looking for 60%. The life drawing test is a nude model and working on poses that get quicker and quicker, longest is smithing like 5, shortest like ten seconds I think.
OK so I got rly carried away with this.
Drop me a line at [email protected] and I can send you more info/my digital portfolio and I mean anything else I can help you with c:
