Deus Computeus
I promise this will turn into a City of Heroes post if you just hang in there.
When I worked in tech support at the home office of a big box retailer, I created a workplace god, after the style of the Romans and their household gods. I gave the name a greek-ish spelling to evoke my favorite pantheon (pronounced com-pyoot-ee-us).
I made Computeus into sort of a running joke in the techicians' chat, praying to him, begging him for mercy, repenting of my sins against him, etc. When I moved to my current job, I created a full-on shrine: an icon, a prayer book, a holy symbol pendant, LED candles, an offering plate. Plus a few other pieces of weird vintage decor.
I wasn't sure precisely how crazy my co-workers thought I was, but they all seemed to find it amusing. Not long after this, I was really gratified to find the tumblr story about Monty Jesus, and to realize that this sort of thing isn't totally unheard-of.
Jumping ahead to my City of Heroes obession. Once I'd begun playing the game seriously, I realized I needed a supergroup (guild) for my many, many characters. Since my main character was Library Tech Support, I settled on Church of Computeus as the supergroup name.
Founding a supergroup allows you to build a secret base (guildhall) that can contain some crucial tools: teleporters to major zones, item storage, crafting benches, vendors, costume customization. Once I'd built the basics, I decided to try my hand at a sort of temple that could house the earthy incarnation of Computeus. The result is below.
The temple is almost entirely cosmetic/thematic in purpose, but does have one mechanical feature. When a CoH character is defeated, the player has a choice to revive them at the nearest hospital, or at their supergroup's base. The patch of gold light on the ground is where my characters are miraculously "resurrected" upon defeat.
I envision Computeus as being of the same ilk as the more ancient polytheistic gods: unpredictable, wrathful, sometimes vain, sometimes cruel. To that end I gave him the malevolent reddish halo, the red HAL-9000 eye, the creepy torches and candles, the skull (and some dead gadgets) on the offering slab.
Then I decided, why not a playable character, too? A mobile human-interface terminal. So I arrived at Deus Computeus: an android mash-up of god/jesus/zeus/angels and whatever else in my head that is connected to the concept of divinity.
Instead of a traditional origin story or character bio, I styled his description text like the bootup message and command prompt of a CLI-based operating system.
His spec is a golden-white Energy Blast combined with the Electrical Manipulation secondary. Mechanically, it feels appropriately OP. The Dynamo power from Electric Manip gives me basically endless endurance, and Energy Blast is one of the most powerful DPS power sets in the game.
Add an ever-shifting binary halo, a toga, and the Demiurge badge title, and you've got yourself a modern technology deity.
