The Xbox's main competitor was the Playstation 3 at the time. The reasoning goes as such: Mom/Grandma/Santa walk into a gamestop to get their son a gift for christmas, and see the two main systems being sold: The PS3 and Xbox 2. Knowing absolutely nothing about video games, the consumer picks the 3 because of the higher number. So, 360 was chosen to help compete w/ Sony
