Ahhh thank you for sharing your oc lore!!! It was all delightful and the main (?) quartet seem great. Honestly the whole world and cast sounds so so cool (extremely tickled by the image of Ian turning into a flower to sleep) but your world lore in general sounds so neat?? Like the naming lore especially is v cool. Do the cast also get like elemental themed powers in addition to being physically themed around their element?

i’m so glad you liked it ahh!! i was also tickled by the sleeping ian thing X3 one of my fav parts of him :) and glad you liked the naming lore i had fun with that part as well!! it is indeed a quartet made up of ian, alyce, kei and ryu (who are all in the read mode my pinned post i think if you’d like to know more!!) there’s also a 5th but she’s kinda a 5th wheel haha. regarding your question, there’s actually a bit of lore around that as well! i don’t think i’ve ever explained it in detail so i’ll do that here if u don’t mind :3

tldr: no, with the exception of maybe fire elements? though there is a species (sprites) that appear less humanoid and do have “element powers”

in my oc universe, there are 3 overall like “species” of sentient beings: sprites, humans, and elementals. all elementals and sorite fall under the general 4 categories of air, fire, water, and nature (very ATLA, lol).

elementals more closely resemble humans: the logic behind them is that they in some way evolved in a way which allows them to best survive in the context of their given element. here’s how that plays out across the elements/what you’d expect from an elemental of each type:

fire: these guys run at super high body heats and are generally resistant if not completely impervious to burns. ones who run especially hot can sometimes channel or “create” fire a la firebender. lol

plant: generally resemble humans in most ways, though their life force is connected to a sprout (of a certain plant species) that grows out of the top of their heads, which will generally reflect their mood & well being (by like, wilting) and will grow/blossom as they age. it also does all the fun sleep stuff that i mentioned with ian. when they’re thriving, they may sprout small blossoms or leaves on their skin (corresponding to their given plant type). they also gain energy in the same way as plants (though can generally digest most foods) and thus get extremely tired/essentially immobile in long periods of darkness (and sometimes appear tinged green because…chlorophyll). i have a lot to say about them can you tell they’re my fav guys i made HAHA,, take basically living human-looking plants

water: pretty close to the general idea of “mermaids”, but each water-element is generally connected to/based on a specific species of fish or underwater mammal, which can reflect in appearance, family dynamic, size, and behavior. they also tend to have fins/scales/gills on the upper body & face & freaky eyes lol. hybrids of these guys with humans tend to lose some of the “realistic fish” aspects though, lol.

air: think “harpy”, though air elements can also have traits/wings/whatever from flying mammals or even insects (they also follow specific species generally). air-elements tend to fluctuate the most in terms of anthropomorphic appearance (ie: one might have a beak and one might not, one might have digitigrade legs and one might have humanoid legs, etc). alyce is one of these & shes based on a raven! there’s also a link there w/golden feathers and royalty but that’s so unrelated to what u asked lol

now the part you actually asked for: each element also has a corresponding SPRITE variety. these appear far less humanoid, love far longer lifespans, do not interact much with the other two, and have what you’d think of as “elemental powers” while elementals do not (ie, shooting fire with little effort/creating magma, controlling rain/tides, blossoming flowers at will, controlling the wind/airbending). marlowe (the 5th wheel) is one of these! she cool i just suck big time at drawing her

since friday, i have watched imallexx’s response video three times in its entirety, including adam’s reaction, as well as inabber’s response to what was said. all this two hours (thrice repeated) did for me was further prove that alex is a piece of shit. granted, alice was also at fault many times, but alex. mate. you can’t act like we didn’t all see the videos, hear the clips. lad. you can’t pretend you didn’t hit her. context or not, you are an arse.

disappointment doesn’t fucking begin to describe how i feel. i was a big fan in like 2018-2019 and hate what this community has become. glad a few are in the clear, but alex, who preached against violence, who dropped louis after the shit came out, who built a CAREER out of talking about abuse or people doing horrid shit, gives a glint of hope for the remaining old-school commentary youtubers to take notes, just for him to embody that shit ten fold.

i am still disgusted. he should have stayed offline. don't waste your time.

Translator Arthur Waley (Essay)

This man, without coming to China or Japan,

Translated "The Tale of Genji" and "Lao Tzu" into real English.

He was a translator and poet.

I wanted to know the secret of his language-learning skills,

The book I'm unraveling doesn't have that description.

It's a pity.

Arthur David Waley was an Englishman of Jewish descent, graduated with honors from Rugby School and Cambridge University, and due to his poor eyesight, gave up his conventional elite career and began working at the British Museum in 1913. Here, he came into contact with unknown oriental literature, learned Chinese, Japanese, and Ainu on his own, and presented Chinese and Japanese classics in concise and easy-to-understand English.

I have an example.

Comparing the two translations, I think Waley is more concise and the translation is more accurate. The difference is particularly noticeable in the third line. I think that the charm of English lies in its brevity, and Waley's translation is accurate. Giles's translation is a bit over-embellished. On the other hand, the two types of flowers are simply called flowers. Waily also translates "orchid" and "chrysanthemum" correctly. Also, it's nice to see the poet's meaning and end the poem with a "!" mark.
