Saw a candle-lit performance of Glück’s opera at the historical Swedish theater Confidencen the other day. Quite nice, the small orchestration made the singing stand out in a delightful way. The ending is marred by having a forced “happy end”, which is apparently because it was composed for a wedding back in nthe day.
Solists:
Orfeus – Maria Sanner
Eurydike – Albina Isufi
Amor – Johanna Wallroth
Adorable Amor and very good Orpheus (alto). One review called it fairly static, which yes, it was, but there were some well-used ballet interludes (two girls who were Countryside Girls, Birds of Paradise and Dead Souls, if I interpret their costumes correctly). During Eurydike’s final song, her sorrow and heartbreak really comes through. I really liked the classical scenography too.
Stockholm has two roccoco-style theater houses that put up “opera as during Gustavus III time”. The other one is Drottningholm, which has the original machinery and sets saved, but which also suffers from much worse ventilation and extremely uncomfortable seats. Confidences, originally built in 1753, was closed down, remodeled into a sort of hunting lodge and the theater machinery was stripped out. It’s been restored and rebuilt during the 20th century, but the result is that they could modernize the backstage a little bit - and they also have better chairs.
Both have had high quality singers when I’ve been there and so, unless you have back/overheating issues, I’d pick based on the performances. There are no text machines at either theater.
