dyslexia is a crazy thing because i genuinely thought it was "Declan started HITTING me first" and just accepted it because yeah sure I guess... they do hit each other until I just saw the quote again, included in some Pinterest post, as "Declan started HATING me first" which makes more sense but now i'm wondering how many other things i might have slightly misread
