oh also random thought but like id anyone hasnt been to pittsburgh yet, or has only been there since like 2020, like this college student i talked to during my last job in elections and she said that she’s only been in town for college for a few years, i’d like let ppl know about the awesome restaurant that was Conflict Kitchen. they were an experimental kitchen business ran by CMU alumni and they only sold food from countries the us is in conflict with. sadly, they closed around 2017 or so due to frickin bomb threats, probably by butthurt conservative snowflakes who couldn’t the stand the sight of a reminder of the us’s failures/forever wars/history. seriously, they had dvds and pamplets at the ordering counter to educate people abt the different cultures/origins of the food they had and stuff. i should’ve probably saved a paper menu i took during a 2014 city trip with an older friend once or something, but i think i probably recycled it or something. im so bummed.

the website also has the menu and any previous menu they’ve had as well.

i am pretty sure that the 2 times i went there, the menu was Iranian food and Iroquois.

Conflict Kitchen is a restaurant that serves cuisine from countries with which the United States is in conflict. Each Conflict Kitchen iteration is augmented by events, performances, publications, and discussions that seek to expand the engagement the public has with the culture, politics, and issues at stake within the focus region. The restaurant rotates identities in relation to current geopolitical events.

The Restaurant uses the social relations of food and economic exchange to engage the general public in discussions about countries, cultures, and people that they might know little about outside of the polarizing rhetoric of governmental politics and the narrow lens of media headlines.

Conflict Kitchen provides a forum for critical dialogue, challenging xenophobia by supporting voices less heard and cultures less considered in the United States. We develop spaces for empathy and action that build a greater sense of curiosity and understanding in American life.

Although we will no longer be based in Schenley Plaza, Conflict Kitchen will continue to expand our educational initiatives throughout the Greater Pittsburgh region with the production of curriculum, performances, public events and publications with cultural institutions, community organizations and schools.

Co-founded by artists John Rubin and Dawn Weleski, Conflict Kitchen is a take out style restaurant in Pittsburgh that only serves cuisine from countries with which the US is in conflict, rotating identities every 6 months in relation to current geopolitical events.  The food is wrapped in beautifully designed paper packaging printed with statements on topics ranging from food to religion, work, and politics.

Operating seven days a week in the city center, Conflict Kitchen reformats the preexisting social relations of food and economic exchange to engage the general public in discussions about countries, cultures, and people that they might know little about outside of the polarizing rhetoric of U.S. politics and the narrow lens of media headlines.

Conflict Kitchen. Oakland. Pittsburgh. Go here. I took my best friend who lives in Indiana. She was floored and in love with the place. "Where are others, is this a chain?" Nope, conveniently located across the street from the Cathedral of Learning. Iranian food. Fried potato cakes (name?) with parsley, cooked veggies, rice, and a delicious sour-yogurt as dressing. The yogurt that Middle Eastern foods use is the best, just my favorite.

Conflict Kitchen 

 The conflict kitchen is an idea founded by John Rubin and Dawn Weleski. The main idea of this concept is to highlight food and culture of nations portrayed as hostile and not considered as allies of the United States[2]. Conflict kitchen was created due to the lack of information, understanding and empathy in the American public sphere for people living in countries that they considered their enemy. Ways that they ensure people are well educated about

 the other countries were to introduce customers to a culture that isn’t based on political conflict but on sharing the voices of people where they use food as a storytelling device to introduce customers to culture and stories that they have never experienced before. Not only does this concept educate people on counter public that may be living in the same country as the like refugees or immigrants, but also breaks down barriers between people. Conflict Kitchen creates a space on the street that prompted cultural and political discussions that are uneasy for Americans to have because it challenges and separate stories that are formed by mainly the media and U.S policy [2].
